An unusual cold wave moved across much of the country with sleet and subzero temperatures. Reports describe a sharp drop from warm air to freezing conditions. states face frigid winds and record lows as December 12 notes signs of a second storm.
A severe blizzard nationwide causes dozens of deaths across several states. Many families are marooned in their homes or boats while the western Washington area suffers floods. Six are dead and one missing as meteorologists warn of plunging temperatures tonight or tomorrow amid widespread snow and cold.
The Adjustment Administration outlines a new dairy and meat control plan led by Administrator George A. and Chester C. to reorganize production and marketing. A pending code, two months away, will formalize a dairy control system with milk marketing and benefit payments under Peek’s oversight.

Arthur A. McDaniel, 24, died after a collision north of Lancaster while en route from Athens to Columbus. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank McDaniel of near New Marshfield and husband of Sybil Rosser of Athens. Funeral services are set for Thursday at the Methodist Protestant Church in New Marshfield with burial in Athens.
Belford Nelson announces a county wide wage increase for CWA workers. Unskilled pay rises from 40 to 50 cents hourly while semi skilled earn 65 cents to $1 and skilled labor 1.20. The 30 hour week remains. disbursement office at City Hall with L. M. Murphy in charge. More workers soon join projects across Athens County.
CHICAGO December 12. The American Farm Bureau Federation hosts a high profile convention with over 1000 farmers listening to Henry A Wallace and George Peek as they clash over policy while Edward A. O Neal predicts the farmer will be 50 percent better off on New Year’s Day than a year earlier amid optimism for agriculture’s future.

Cleveland December 12 The United States through the Home Owners Loan Corporation will pursue court action against banks foreclosing on homes eligible for H O L C relief. Di rector Henry Brunner Ohio division said the case of John Hibben prompted him to review after Union Trust Co. declined to accept H O L C bonds in place of a 2400 mortgage balance.
George N. Peek, former AAA administrator, told the American Farm Bureau Federation that a controlled profit system is necessary to reward initiative and thrift for the recovery program to succeed. He warned that concern over government absorbing private business is unwarranted and that the government has more hay down now than it will get up before it rains if it remains insulated.
Washington December 12 Edward G Lowry and Joseph Choate representatives of the administration at the joint congressional liquor tax hearing proposed a whisky levy of about $2 a gallon which Lowry said would permit retail sale of liquor at $1 50 a quart.
In Elmore Ohio Fred Miller 35 leaped from an upper window in a freezing 10 degree night to save his wife and three children. He caught each child as their mother dropped them to him from above before Mrs Miller joined him in safety. The home and all belongings were destroyed.

Fort Erie Ont December 12 The search for Bert Ashley prominent mining operator and his pilot Jack Nicholls continues as a blizzard hampers rescue planes. No word has been received since they departed from Toronto on a short flight to Fort Erie.
Lawrence Whiteman of Clarksburg West Virginia faced extradition to Athens for failure to provide for his six minor children. He pleaded not guilty and was bound over to the grand jury after arraignment before Magistrate Carl H Porter. Whiteman was jailed for missing a $600 bond. His wife Edna filed the complaint alleging non support since January.
Five individuals appeared before Mayor Robert Wood and were fined a total of 130 dollars plus costs. Elmer McClanahan, a farmer, paid 100 dollars and costs after pleading guilty to driving while intoxicated following a collision on Mill Street. Three other occupants faced intoxication charges. Earnest Nash and Harry Larch each fined 10 dollars and costs, Clayton Johnson and Mia Florence Reitzsel fined 5 dollars and costs.
