An Indian air raid on Dacca struck an orphanage housing 400 children and 100 staff at 3 15 am. Rescue workers recovered 17 bodies as many boys remained missing. The founder Mohammed Rahman, linked to Indira Gandhi’s grandfather, described the devastation and destroyed registers.
AP reporter Peter O Loughlin notes residents in Dacca feel Indian forces from multiple directions are tightening the noose. India claims troops are within 28 miles of Dacca and Bangla Desh liberation advances are freeing areas from Pakistani occupation under Jagjivan Ram. Comilla and Sylhet fell, Rangpur and Dinajpur expected to follow.
The House moved to extend President Nixon's wage and price controls through April 30, 1973, with speeded procedures to send a bill to the White House. A conference with the Senate will resolve differences. retroactive pay raises from August 15 may be paid if not excessive under board standards. Ralph J. Bunche 67 and Nobel Peace Prize winner for 1950 died today at New York Hospital after months of illness. He helped negotiate the 1949 Palestine ceasefire between Israel and Arab states and later supervised UN operations in the Congo and the deployment of the UN Emergency Force after Suez. He was the highest ranking American on the UN secretariat.
