Indian forces reach within 28 miles of Dacca as they push from the east and south aided by three infantry columns and three armored brigades. In Kashmir the Chhamb sector remains contested with Pakistanis defending key routes to Srinagar.
Kentucky burley tobacco prices climbed to an average of 82.08 per hundred pounds on Tuesday, topping the prior high by 97 cents as markets reported 18,705,066 pounds sold and 15,353,452.22 dollars in revenue. In Cleveland city government layoffs began with 85 announced and total idled expected to reach 1,000 before Mayor Perk ends.
Gov. John Gilligan and Development Director David Sweet will testify at a Congressional subcommittee hearing in Bowling Green on rural depopulation. Sen. Hubert Humphrey, chairing the panel, notes Bowling Green was chosen for signs of reversing long standing migration trends. The hearing is the seventh in the series exploring areas with large rural populations.
Amtrak says Ohio New York Pennsylvania Indiana and Illinois default on two thirds of losses for the New York to Chicago train. President Roger Lewis says letters requesting reimbursements were sent and service may end next month after seven months of operation.
Judge Lloyd Brown of the Cleveland Municipal Court says the Supreme Court’s slower pace will give him time to reflect on the law. He was appointed by Gov. John Gilligan to replace Robert Duncan, who resigned November 28 to join the U.S. Military Court of Appeals.
Kenneth M. Gookins, 51, sports editor of the Zanesville Times Recorder, died Tuesday of a heart attack. A renowned outdoor writer, he was an authority on water pollution control and conservation and won the Writer of the Year award from the Ohio Conservation Congress last April.
The GOP plans to propose redrawing Ohio congressional districts to favor Republicans as the 109th General Assembly opens. The plan would reduce Ohio to 23 districts, eliminating either Charles Carney's 19th district or Wayne Hays's 18th. Meanwhile a budget tax stalemate persists with a conference panel expected to report late today and House action on a strengthened air pollution control board.
Rep. John Ashbrook weighs a campaign to challenge Richard Nixon for the presidency to push conservative views. The Ohio Republican, 43, faces a decision next week on whether to seek votes against Nixon to gain a louder conservative hearing at the White House.
Washington AP reports the Pay Board may require advance approval for any wage agreement exceeding 5.5 percent per year, narrowing reporting to include smaller agreements. The board considers three proposals, with a trend toward stricter oversight and possible notification requirements. In other news, the Price Commission approved a 3.6 percent across the board rise for U.S. Steel steel-mill products after an earlier 8 percent demand.
In Ravenna Ohio AP reports the Kent State University riot trials end after 19 months. John Hayward the chief prosecutor says 20 defendants still to be tried have charges dropped for lack of evidence. Mary Helen Nicholas is acquitted for interfering with a fireman during the May 2 1970 ROTC building blaze. Other indicted defendants plead guilty in Portage County.
Ohio Attorney General says 10 cases dismissed for lack of evidence after reviewing transcripts from the state grand jury that indicted 25 in the Kent State disturbances. Acquittal of Miss Nicholas, Kent State sophomore, was ordered for lack of evidence. Judge Jones noted potential 14th Amendment rights issues.
