Gemini 7, Houston center report, continues two week mission as Lovell prepares to shed his space suit and ride in underwear. The crew aims to test moisture behavior on windows and may beam a laser Earthward while tracking Cape Kennedy and Vandenberg missile activity.
Crews race on the launch pad to ready the Gemini 6 spacecraft for a December 13 flight with Gemini 7. Navy Capt. Walter M. Schirra Jr. and Air Force Maj. Thomas P. Stafford aim to rendezvous in space, flying in close formation for about six hours.
Flight Director Christopher Kraft announced Gemini 6 second stage was bolted to a Titan 2 six hours early and checkouts were smooth. He floated a possible December 12 launch for the second vehicle but said the earlier liftoff chances were slim as Borman and Lovell prepared.
At the Manned Spacecraft Center in Houston Kraft described the flight as completely normal with the spacecraft working perfectly. Gemini flight surgeon Dr. Charles A. Berry added the crew is in excellent physical condition, about as normal as you could hope for.
Columbus attorney Joseph J Murphy announces a bid for the Democratic nomination in Ohio's new 17th State Senate district. Former Miami County representative who moved to Columbus in 1961 aims to represent south east Franklin Fairlield Hocking Pickaway Ross and Vinton counties in the redesigned district. A separate Cincinnati report states Thelma Holden and her three children were rescued from a gas filled home after a telephone cry for help. all four were reported in fair condition at Good Samaritan Hospital.
The Poverello Medal, Steubenville College’s top non academic honor, was awarded Sunday to comedian Joe E. Brown, a 65 year veteran noted for entertaining servicemen worldwide during World War II. Brown, a Holgate Ohio native, is the award’s first recipient.
Normal operations resume at Allied Chemical Co. Nitrogen Division after a 32 month contract ratified following a 65 day strike. Supervisory personnel kept the plant running during the United Steelworkers walkout.
Pope Paul V ordered a sweeping revision of the Vatican Holy Office, altering its status and name, lifting some secrecy, and granting defendants the right of defense in proceedings.
Paris voters delivered a sharp rebuff to Charles de Gaulle in the first round of France’s presidential election with 84.9 percent turnout. In New York the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 14.98 points to 931.12 in the first half hour of trading after the Federal Reserve Board raised the discount rate. Heavy trading followed a slow opening with large blocks crossing the NYSE ticker tape. Most blue chips posted losses with some shares down as much as $2 from Friday's close.
The Soviet Luna 8 space capsule nears the moon to attempt a soft landing in the Ocean of Storms around 4 50 P M EST. Retrorockets will brake the craft for a gentle touch on the airless surface after a course adjustment.
In Sotouboua two trucks plowed into a crowd at a village carnival killing more than 100 people and injuring 100 others. An American Peace Corps worker James Driscoll from Buffalo was among the dead as government planes carried doctors and supplies to the site 180 miles from Lome.
Eastern Air Lines pilot Charles J. White died after crash landing his propeller plane to aid evacuation following a collision with a TWA jet near Kennedy Airport. Capt. Thomas H. Carroll of TWA guided his craft to a safe landing despite flight damage. Three others perished and 50 injured as investigators examine the crash causes.
The Federal Reserve Board boosted rates to the highest since 1930, raising the discount rate from 4 to 4.5 percent and deposits on 30 plus day accounts from 4.5 to 5.5 percent. The move, aimed at curbing inflation and a persistent balance of payments deficit, drew presidential disapproval but gained initial banking support. President Johnson in Johnson City Texas voiced regret over higher credit costs for homes and schools.
The Vatican Ecumenical Council passed its final schema on modern world problems with 2111 votes in favor and 483 against the war and peace chapter. Pope Paul VI accepted the document amid high opposition to its nuclear warfare condemnation and birth control study provisions.

Xavier University student Mark Lindenmeyer and his father joined National Guardsmen and a bystander to pursue Maurice Watson after he grabbed a woman's purse near a church. Watson was held for investigation as Mrs. Ernestine Watson recounted the attack and injuries.
Johnson City report cites preventable chain reaction in the Northeast blackout of Nov 9 affecting 30 million. It blames Canadas Sir Adam Beck plant staff for not resetting a relay and notes Con Edison and other utilities could have acted faster to avert citywide outages.

U S infantry and South Vietnamese troops fought waves of attacks 40 miles northwest of Saigon with air and naval support. The contested area around a rubber plantation saw heavy U S casualties and up to 200 Communist deaths, as the 1st Infantry Division engaged in its fiercest fighting since arrival. Eight killed, including one American.
