Ohio lawmakers aim to finish the 1963 session today after a five day resumption. The House would approve a $157.4 million appropriations bill advancing capital improvements and state funds for highways higher education and related projects across multiple counties and universities.
President Johnson laid out a foreign policy vision stressing strength justice temperance and patience in two closed meetings with officials. He spoke to the National Security Council and 800 State Department leaders about a growing sense of hope and a favorable balance of power for the United States.
Christine Keeler and Paula Hamilton Marshall pleaded guilty to perjury and conspiracy and received prison terms of nine and six months respectively. Olive Brooker received probation, and Rudolph Fenton pleaded innocent to conspiracy. The defendants admitted they conspired to frame Aloysius Gordon, a Jamaican jazz singer nicknamed Lucky.
The FBI has finished its bulk report on President Kennedy's assassination but has not released details. The report was sent to the Justice Department and then to President Johnson for the Warren Commission review.
Ruby J. Griffin of St. Albans, 48, suffered a head injury in a one car crash at 2 a.m. Friday on Route 17 near the Coast Guard station. She was a passenger in a car driven by Rodney Stinnett, 28, U S Navy, which overturned on the highway. Griffin was taken from Pleasant Valley Hospital to Huntington Hospital as state police investigate.
A Pearl Harbor Day observance marks 22 years since the attack. The flag flies at half mast over the Arizona memorial to honor 1102 sailors, and the tribute includes a garland for the fallen American Navy lieutenant John Fitzgerald Kennedy killed two weeks earlier.
Nineteen year old James Priest spots a hiding place on his family farm and captures one suspect, Gerald Browning, in a $6,602 robbery of the Frazersburg branch. John Mayo is found in a haystack. Edmund Floot remains at large as the FBI labels him extremely dangerous. All captured suspects waived preliminaries and await U S District Court in Columbus.
Funds already exist for a six million dollar Kennedy Memorial Library at Harvard. Harvard President Pusey announced design will start soon. A museum for Kennedy possessions is planned. A corporation to fund the project was formed with Robert F. Kennedy and Edward M. Kennedy in leadership roles. The building will be on two acres near the Harvard Business School within viewing distance of Winthrop House.
Senate Appropriations Committee approves a 4.5 billion public works bill funding three SEQO projects in Ohio. Racine Locks and Dam gets 15 million for early construction. Reedsville Belleville Locks and Dam receives 12 million for ongoing work. Hocking River survey allocated 43 thousand. Reidsville-Belleville increase adds 5 million above House bill. total fiscal year funds exceed House by 224.871 million.
In Washington Republican readers weigh Goldwater’s chance to maintain a lead as reports circulate about a Nixon bid in New Hampshire. Goldwater, who has not declared, says he remains in the lead though he sees a minor reassessment. Nixon aide says no comment. Nixon previously says he will not run in 1964.
Rep Robert Taft Jr of Cincinnati announced his bid for the U S Senate seat held by Democrat Stephen M Young. He will face Ted W Brown for the Republican nomination after Bricker declined to run, continuing the family political legacy begun by his father Robert A Taft.
The Labor Department links AFL-CIO member losses to a pattern toward white collar jobs. From 1960 to 1962 affiliates shed 220 000 members, with 1968 figures unavailable but trend likely continuing. Officials cite structural economic shifts and weak demand for industrial products, noting little sign of a 1930s-40s era union surge.
