President Johnson counters former President Truman by saying high interest rates reflect strong demand and a buoyant economy. He argues recession risk is overstated and calls for restraint on inflation without relying solely on rate hikes. Truman warns persistent high rates could depress the economy and burden governments and consumers.
House members rally around President Truman as Speaker McCormack and Senators endorse his warnings. The Rules Committee considers a bill capping bank deposit rates at four percent for deposits up to 100000 dollars to curb competition with savings and loan associations and aid home construction finance.
Bands of Negro youths roamed Benton Harbor and other areas as unrest spread north along Lake Michigan. Police in Waukegan and Milwaukee suburb Waumatosa curfew enforcement led to arrests, including whites and a Puerto Rican, amid curfew violations and clashes during a week of rioting and demonstrations.

Mrs. Freda Newell of Point Pleasant Route 2 reports her 17 year old son Nelson Lee has been missing since last night. He is 5 foot 5 inches tall with a broken leg and on crutches, the sheriff's department reports as they investigate the disappearance.
NHK reports 500000 Chinese demonstrated before the Soviet Embassy in Beijing, continuing from Monday’s rally led by Red Guards. The youth group carried Mao banners and denounced revisionists, with no direct anti-Russian shouts observed. The demonstrations were noisy but orderly, amid apparent diplomatic sensitivities with Moscow.
Oliver Bailey, 51, of Racine Route 1, died when tons of dirt collapsed on him at a Clay Chapel strip mine near Raccoon Road in Gallia County around 2 15 p.m. Coroner Dr. Donald Warehime ruled asphyxia. Miners recovered the body in about 15 minutes. shovel operator Albert Ehman said the earth collapsed before Bailey could escape.

Washington reports quote Senator Richard B. Russell criticizing a House Armed Services plan to call up about 190000 Reservists as inadequate. The bill would activate 56000 non drilling Reservists and 133000 others who completed training.
