Thousands of Red Guards gathered near the Soviet Embassy in Beijing to protest anti revisionism slogans while heeding calls for discipline. Mao and Lin Piao were accused of using the movement to purge opposition, as portraits of Marx Lenin Stalin and Mao were displayed near the embassy.
U S planes sank two torpedo boats and damaged two more after identifying four in the Gulf of Tonkin. In Saigon area Viet Cong attempted two blockades of shipping channels with limited success. U S and allied forces reported light fighting with several enemy casualties and multiple air and ground actions across South Viet Nam and near the Cambodian border.
A homemade gasoline firebomb hit a car during riots in Waukegan's South Genesee Street injuring six passengers. Police said 400 to 500 people rioted, smashing windows and tossing firebombs as guards, deputies, and troopers reinforced the area. Esther Albarran, 15, and others were hospitalized in serious condition. Civil rights marchers faced jeering crowds in Milwaukee and planned to return to Wauwatosa with National Guard protection.
Former President Truman voiced concern over rising interest rates and warned they may trigger a depression and burden governments and consumers. He criticized the Fed for tightening monetary policy while noting the action could hurt the consuming public and benefit only the privileged few.
The stock market fell again in heavy trading as the Dow Jones average of 30 industrials dropped 5.45 points to 775.11 at noon. Early losses were shared, with the New York Stock Exchange ticker tape running about 10 minutes late amid widespread declines.

Ottawa rail strike paralyzes service as thousands protest wages. Johnson may travel from LBJ Ranch toward the White House with possible weekend stops at dam dedication sites.

President Lyndon Johnson could appear in Lancaster on Labor Day to support U S Representative Walter H Moeller in a tight reelection bid. Vice President Hubert Humphrey may visit Athens October 10 or 11 to address a district fund raiser aiding Moeller’s campaign.
