Fire of unknown origin totally destroyed the two story frame dwelling of Oral Daugherty in Buchtel last night at about 10. Neighbors alerted crews from Murray City and Nelsonville. Loss estimate 2000 to 2500 dollars, partly insured. Worden family away when fire reported.
A Chauncey burial committee of Mine 25 at Manhattan Coal passed a resolution thanking Gov. George White for protection and work rights in the Hocking Valley. They also approved employing a checkweighman at the Chauncey mine.
National Guard officers arrested Opal Howard Harley Bailey and Hubert Blair Monday in Morristown. Blair pleaded guilty to intoxication and was fined ten dollars. Howard and Bailey were found guilty on intoxication charges, each fined twenty dollars. Authorities planned to file concealed weapons charges against Howard and Bailey. A revolver was found in the car and another in the grass along Chauncey road.
In Taylorville Illinois National Guard officers convened miners operators and local officials to arbitrate wage disputes that sparked a weeks long strike. The new scale of five dollars a day replaces six dollars ten cents and many mines continue operating while strikers confront authorities near the Muddy River Bridge in Franklin County as tension remains high.
Howard F. McTaggart asked the Public Utilities Commission for permission to start natural gas service in Barlow Ohio. The plan sets a monthly minimum of one dollar and charges one dollar for the first 2 000 cubic feet, 45 cents per 1000 for excess, with a five cent prompt payment discount.
Columbus August 30 The Ohio State Fair enters its second year with warm clear weather and lower admission prices fueling optimism for a record crowd. Monday attendance rose 50 percent from last year’s first day as heat victims rose to twenty and eighty people sought first aid. Judging continues for cattle sheep horses and hogs while dog cat and canary shows run. A polo tournament was planned and the horse show at the Coliseum opens at 7 p m with a 300 piece Ohio High School Band concert and a Washington Lives pageant on the night program.
Washington Aug 30 The American Legion plans to back a full immediate cash bonus at its upcoming convention to keep members from leaving for rival groups. Observers say leadership fears not endorsing full payment drives deser tions, though officials declined to confirm. The Legion’s current membership is about 100000 fewer than a year ago after the Detroit convention vote.

Elyria Ohio August 30 Deputy Marshal Albert Kous of Avon Lake was arrested after admitting he shot and critically wounded Ralph Schivley 17 Amherst who rode in a car with Robert Standen 20 and Schivley sisters Lucille 16 and Evelyn 20. Kous fired from his car as Standen tried to pass and said he wanted to scare them. Shirley remained in serious condition.
United States Senator James J. Davis of Pennsylvania and three other defendants faced arraignment in Federal Court on indictments alleging violation of lottery laws and conspiracy. Davis, as director general of the Loyal Order of Moose, is accused of aiding two Moose lotteries. Also charged are Theodore G. Miller of Mooseheart Illinois, head of Moose propagation. Bernard C. McGuire of Aurora Illinois and New York, described as a lottery promoter, and his assistant Raymond Walsh.

Capt James A Mollison intends to fly today from Sydney Nova Scotia to Harbor Grace Newfoundland as the start of his journey home to Europe. The Scotsman, first to cross the Atlantic westward solo, arrived in Sydney from St John New Brunswick after a severe storm forced him to land in a farm field three miles outside the city, the third pasture landing since leaving Britain.

M. J. Going, 78, a traveling salesman, died after a thunderclap struck as he was ill with pneumonia. Physicians ruled the shock caused his heart to stop, and his death occurred instantly following the thunder.

Van Wert August 30 John Kelner twenty, a State Highway Department employee, was fatally hurt when a fall of stone buried him at a local quarry. He died at the scene. The incident is under investigation by local authorities.
The death of Anna E. Mitchell, 32, mother of four, of Careys Run, was investigated by Coroner Virgil E. Fowler after she reportedly drank wood alcohol.
Leonard Dunfee seventeen of Athens along with his brother Herman and William Hill of Parkersburg were linked to a theft of cigarets from the Bledel Mead Filling Station on Lancaster and Carpenter last week. Athena Juvenile Judge A. Johnson sent Dunfee to the Boys Industrial School at Lancaster.
