CHICAGO Aug 30 One bandit died after a hail of over 100 shots from police ambush as three masked men tried to rob a street car barn cashier of 6000. Ernest Delaverne died later. John Maloney likely won't survive. A third bandit escaped. two girls outside were captured but one escaped. Marie Nolan named as the bandits' contact. Police guarded the cashier’s car at the barns after a tip from a traction company employee.
Funeral services for Rudolph Valentino drew tens of thousands as actors and friends followed the hearse through the theatre district. Jean Acker Pola Negri Mary Pickford and Constance Talmadge joined the cortege. Valentino's burial plans call for Hollywood on Wednesday.
Mexico City reports the church and state in a stalemate as Congress meets next month. A church petition for reform of the law is possible but unlikely to gain traction with supporters of President Calles. Archbishop Mora del Rio may issue another pastoral letter to define the faithful stance in the ongoing dispute.

Logan Ohio region report says George Lutz shot in right foot by state officers during arrest attempt at Buck Run home near Rockbridge. Lutz, who reportedly sold whisky on a large scale, was hit while fleeing with a jug and gun. He walked to a filling station then to hospital and gave his account.
Columbus reports the death of Mrs Lillian Chry Singer 45 after a month long battle with sleeping sickness. The obituary notes her residence in Columbus and her surviving family.
Ernest Vierkotter, a German, swam the English Channel from Cape Gris Nez to Dover in 12 hours 42 minutes, about 1 hour 49 minutes faster than Gertrude Ederle's mark. He landed at Langdon Stairs Dover, while Ederle faced rest and recovery orders after public reception.
Eighth grade graduation exercises will be held Tuesday afternoon in Ewing Hall on the Ohio University campus. About 615 graduates from 92 one room and 21 two room schools will receive diplomas from H. R. McVay. B. O. Skinner will deliver the address. Most graduates plan to enroll in the high school they attend.
With 245 of 252 counties reporting in the Texas runoff for governor the Democratic race shows Dan Moody leading Governor Miriam A Ferguson 469,182 to 274,100. Ferguson declined to comment while her husband Jim Ferguson noted Moody would face a tough governorship.

Jane Norton Straight eight year old daughter of Mt. Clemens public safety director Alan G. Straight and Mrs. Straight died August 20 after a four day illness from bulbar paralysis. She was the granddaughter of Mrs. Augustus Norton and Mrs. Frances Norton Price publisher of the Mt. Clemens Daily Leader.
New York reports producer Arch Selwyn courting Gertrude Ederle for a Manhattan Island swim against Mrs. Cremington Corson with a $25,000 purse. Corson has $200,000 in offers from backers including T. Walter Lissberger and Wrigley Jr. tries for a California to Catalina swim. Naval militia at the Illinois train ship pledge a welcome for Mrs. Corson. Ederle recovers from a potential breakdown and takes a brief motor trip after a day in bed.
Mrs. Margaret Munns national treasurer of the W C T U told Aurora listeners that wets cheat prohibition by seeking repeal and claim deaths and orgies from bootleg liquor, arguing they want to sell and drink liquor despite option regulations and national laws.
Ohio's three "dollar murderers" John Hedricks Richard Rhodes and John Bryant all of Pomeroy are scheduled for execution by electric chair next Thursday between 8 and 9 p m. They killed for $15 to $30 per head and were sentenced by Judge A P Miller who bought cigars for the men. Warden P E Thomas will place them in the chair in prison number order beginning with 55644 Bryant.
Federal prohibition agents opened an inquiry into the missing $50,000 worth of grain alcohol from a Rockford dis tillery warehouse operated by the Chicago grain products company. The probe is led by James Watson, a Chicago prohibition official.
Irving Berlin and his wife Elin Mackay were escorted by special police to hide them from photographers after a trip abroad. The couple arrived in New York in the early morning with Berlin saying they had a very good time. Mrs. Berlin was taken by taxi to a friend’s home, while Berlin remained in the cab and later planned to stay at home for the rest of the summer and work.
Aug 30 report states John Hedricks's two small children may visit their condemned father at the Ohio penitentiary prior to his scheduled electric chair death. Mrs Hedricks had placed the children in the Meigs County home and traveled to Columbus to seek work while awaiting the execution date.
W. H. Sumner, 42, was struck on the head with a baseball bat while trying to quell a free-for-all at a sand lot game in Kansas City. He was left in critical condition after intervening in a fight between two spectators over a dog fight.
Violence broke out during the night in Danville Rhode Island as cotton mill workers' strike escalated. The Danville Jenckes company mill was set afire and authorities worked to control the blaze and maintain order.
