The Athens School Board announced the employment of four new teachers and one resignation. Resigning is Miss Wyona Gardner, who taught first grade at Central School for five years and married July 17 to John Buse of Chicago. New hires are Miss Helen Cornwell Aliquippa Pa art teacher at the high school and three Central School instructors Miss Ethel Reese Millersburg Ohio Miss Helen Moriarty Athens and Miss Louise Young Athens both first grade and third grade respectively, with Miss Reese in departmental work.
Secretary Roper declared that business is on the upgrade and that the Roosevelt administration stands for just profits. He said the government believes in the private profit motive and that business is better than business sentiment. He added that if business courage matched the statistics, a real business boom would be needed.
In Cincinnati on August 23 the Weather Bureau records for July 4 helped reduce Peter Gavin’s charge from burglary to house breaking after proof that he entered the dwelling before 9 p m and twilight lasted until 10 p m. He received a sentence of one to five years.

Prosecuting Attorney John W. Bolin filed a first degree murder charge against 71 year old Quincy Cole of Coolville Route 3 for the shooting of 65 year old Herbert Griffen at their shared address. Griffen died in a Parkersburg hospital days later. Cole pleaded not guilty at arraignment before Magistrate C. H. Porter and is jailed awaiting bond set by Judge C. F. Rowland. Officers say Cole admitted shooting Griffen over alleged infidelity with his wife.
From the Valley of Death in Wyoming comes the skull of a rare Barosaurus, a semi aquatic dinosaur with a long neck. F Trubbe Davison of the American Museum of Natural History announced the discovery based on Dr Barnum Brown's excavation in the Big Horn Mountains.
Harold Taylor is jailed on murder charges in the death of 19 year old Faye New of Howard College. Police allege she was abducted during a ride with Taylor and killed after a struggle. A. B. Cain, Faye's suitor, was questioned and released as investigators pursue Taylor. Her parents plan to take her body to Heflin for funeral services.
In Harrison County, Judge G O Canaga awarded 65 year old Joe Kobus monthly alimony of 25 dollars from his 45 year old wife Mary if she fails to support him. Kobus claimed he turned over property to his wife but she refused to provide shelter food and clothing. Mrs Kobus rushed in with a satchel of dynamite fragments. the judge ordered her to remove and bury the material.
Akron July 23 A temporary restraining order blocks Burns Coal Company from selling coal below NRA code floor prices. Judge Arthur W. Doyle granted the order at the request of Oscar Brown assistant state attorney general. Case under Ohio Recovery Act enforcement of NRA. Defendant must mark delivery tickets with mine and seam.
C S De Rain national treasurer of Delta Chi has been missing since August 15 after an audit showed $82,000 in government bonds in his accounts. Bonds listed did not match bonds submitted, prompting the probe by John C Grover and bonded representatives. Delta Chi operates 37 active chapters nationwide.
ANGMAGSALIK Greenland Aug 23 A British aviator John Grierson, after a month of staged Atlantic flights, was lost near the eastern Greenland coast. He was found shivering in a desolate fjord by Reverend Roving, a half breed Eskimo minister, and guided to a nearby settlement to resume his journey to America.
The Drum and Bugle Corps of the K. T. Crossen Post in Athens received invitation to enter the tri state drum corps contest at Parkersburg High School Stadium during the West Virginia State Legion Convention on Labor Day. Ohio West Virginia and Pennsylvania corps are invited. Raymond Connett entered the individual bugle contest and won third place. The Athens unit marched in the parade to applause and was praised by an unofficial drill judge. The Athens uniforms are French blue with dark blue trim and silver helmets. drums are blue and instruments liver.
The American Liberty League prepares a continental campaign to recruit 3 to 4 million property owners to judge the New Deal. Leaders from both parties identify as conservatives, with Alfred Smith and John W. Davis among Democrats and James Wadsworth and Nathan Miller among Republicans. The league aims to defend the Constitution, promote property rights, and monitor government action while staying nonpartisan and not anti-Roosevelt.
In Havana on August 23, Major Angel Echevarria and Captain Augustin Brice were sentenced to death by a court martial for taking part in a revolutionary plot against Col. Fulgencio Batista. The trial took place at Camp Columbia near Havana after a rapid 24 hour sequence of discovery, arrest, and prosecution. Reports of eight enlisted men shot in Pinar Del Rio were officially denied, though newspapers claimed they were true.
Cincinnati report says Hans F. P. Wuesthoff a 62 year old social worker jumped 100 feet into the Ohio River hoping to kill himself. He survived with broken ribs and aided rescuers to get into a boat before help arrived.
A Caste side gangster and an associate are sought as suspects in the Lorain Avenue Morris Plan Bank robbery. About $3,000 was stolen. Authorities pursue the pair as leads develop in this Cleveland crime case on August 23.
