Second Quarter Coal Consumption Exceeds Production
Stocks of bituminous coal in the United States fell in the second quarter as consumption topped production and buyers drew on reserves. On July 1 total coal held by commercial buyers and retailers stood at 26.3 million tons, down from April 1 and May 1 levels, with April withdrawals reaching 2.35 million tons and May June draws at 0.9 million. Compared with a year ago stocks are down 12.6 percent, though May–June consumption kept reserves adequate for about 41 days. Additional storage included 4.878 million tons on upper lake docks and 1.632 million tons in mine cars awaiting billing. Production rose 5.2 percent for the week ending Aug. 13 to 4.695 million net tons, while Ohio’s calendar-year production through July 31 reached 6.344 million tons.
