Clarence Withrow of Albany pleads guilty to assault and battery before Magistrate C H Porter and is fined 25 dollars and costs. He is jailed in Athens County Jail for nonpayment. Sheriff Wayne Wingett arrested him after an alleged Sunday assault on John Gradinski on the Albany highway. Henry Merriman of Deanville pleads guilty to intoxication and is fined 10 dollars and costs and jailed on default. The arrest stemmed from an affidavit by Peter Barrows.
Columbus Aug 22 Plans for the annual meeting of the Ohio Council of the Junior Order of United American Mechanics will be made tonight in preparation for the gathering here next Sunday and Monday.
Mable May Matson Shan er of Millfield sues Sunday Creek and Poston Consolidated Coal Companies in Athens County Common Pleas Court seeking 2800 for mining damage. She alleges underground undermining cracked plaster warped doors and a yard riddled with crevasses making her home unfit and yard unusable.
Aug 22 report from Columbus states one man died and two were injured in a crash on State Route 42 eight miles northeast of Plain City. Dead is Duey Maynard 35 of Baxter Tennessee. Others Abner Vann 25 of Akron and Floyd Clark of Orrville were involved. Vann and Maynard were Goodyear employees driving from Akron to Cincinnati.
Ohio roads and waters claimed at least ten lives over the weekend. In Cincinnati three people died in crashes raising the year toll to 74, including Steve Chick 21 Patrick Concidine to 48 and Gus Stith 48. A Cleveland explosion killed Carol Robert Williams 23. Two men drowned in Sandusky Bay when their boat overturned. Garfield Glenn 80 of East Liverpool died when his car left a sharp curve between Alliance and Cleveland. Robert Evans 14 died after being thrown from a moving auto at Ashtabula. Clayton Blake of Zimmerman Ohio died in Dayton from injuries in a crash. Charles White 30 of Cynthiana died in Portsmouth from a collision. Six others injured.
New York Aug 22. Lack of campaign funds and reports of write in Alfred E Smith on the presidential ballot cause unease among Democratic leaders. Cards urging Smith appear in Nebraska Minnesota and other states. Smith says he will support the ticket while Roosevelt leaders fear split support.
The Reconstruction Finance Corporation lent or allotted 55 million dollars to over 400 borrowers in the last ten days of July. The report shows 437 loans totaling 45,057,556.10 and increases of 16,530,500 from July 21 to July 31, with 3,000,000 for relief and work relief and 5,000,000 allocated to the agriculture secretary for agricultural relief.
Wilton Lackaye, famed for the role of Svengali in Trilby and once drawn into a 1923 fist fight with John J. McGraw, died today in New York after a heart disease attack. He would have turned 70 on September 30.

In Trimble Glouster and Jacksonsville fire crews battled a blaze early Tuesday after a dynamite explosion that destroyed the Chadwell home. Officials say the fire had incendiary origins and Chadwell works at Sunday Creek Mine No 6 at Mittefield. his wife and three sons live with relatives near Nelsonville.

In Marion Ohio on August 2 Clark Bast, George White age 25, and Sterling aged 28, all of Cynthia, were hospitalized after being wounded when Ashwood Stover 26, a grocer, shot at them as they fled his store following a robbery. Bast was in critical condition while White and Sterling suffered leg and other wounds.
A fire of undetermined origin destroyed a ker tel and another building in Paris Kentucky on August 22, causing damage but with no reported injuries. Local crews fought the blaze through the night and assess the total loss.
Columbus Aug 22 About 1000 students will receive degrees at a summer convocation at Ohio State University officials said. The ceremony honors graduates from the college of arts sciences and engineering with others in attendance.
