Black mayor cites whites spent funds in Fayette appeal
Fayette Mississippi mayor Charles Evers said about $65,000 was raised in May or through his nationwide fund drive to replenish the town’s treasury. He reported donations from $1 to several hundred dollars and that the money would help restore the city’s finances. Evers, the nation’s only Black mayor leading a biracial Mississippi town, made the appeal after taking office in July, saying the previous all white administration had exhausted the city’s money.
