In Portland Oregon five relatives from three families were drowned when a 15 foot outboard motor boat capsized on the Columbia River on a Sunday. Mrs O G McCann and her son Delbert died though Mr McCann and his five year old daughter Orva were saved. Marvin Gholson and his six year old daughter Audrey remained missing while Mrs Gholson and daughter Jean were rescued. Billy Nelson sank after clinging to the boat.
Hollywood report says Jerry Jernegin music composer and Irene Franklin's husband died from a self-inflicted gunshot. Police ordered a homicide inquiry but Capt. Wallis deemed it death by own action, noting the revolver lay six feet from the body in a Lake Hollywood Drive home living room.
McGuffey August 2.
