The Air Force acquires a 40 acre tract surrounding Ohio’s highest point in Jefferson Township Logan County near Bellefontaine. Owned by the Helen Wagner Trust of Columbus the land is now a game refuge. A spokesman said the intended use is classified and may not be disclosed.
The House Ways and Means Committee is finalizing legislation aimed at protecting about 42 million American workers from poverty in old age.
Western Germany delivered a decisive election result as the Conservative Christian Democrats led with 7,356,025 votes to 6,932,303 for the Social Democrats. The Free Democrats surged to 2,827,948 while the Reds faced a fourth major Western European defeat since the war.

FBI identified Earl D. Bircham 45 as Public Enemy No 1 and held him on murder and malicious shooting charges after a fatal police shooting in Louisville last night. Patrolman John H. Tenison died and Patrolman John A. Ross was critically wounded. Bircham’s wife June Bircham was detained without charge.
The Gallipolis board of elections reports enough signatures withdrawn to invalidate a Greenfield Township beer sale petition while a liquor sales petition is referred to the secretary of state. A nominating petition for Robert Queen as Justice of the Peace was declared insufficient, disqualifying Queen, and Russell M. Smith withdrew his candidacy leaving Maurice W. Grover as the sole Gallia County candidate.
Gallipolis. Woodrow B Saunders, who resigned as a deputy under Sheriff Eh man, will start work in the state liquor store here Tuesday. Saunders resides at 718 First Ave.
Bill Lehman 16 of Haydenville won the Hocking and Perry county Messenger boys championship bicycle race at Logan High School track with a 1 25.8 half mile. He defeated Ronnie Brandon 15 of Logan in the final heat. Bill Stone 14 of Murray City took third.

Conditions appear ideal for the 21 mile crossing.

Ohio roads claimed seven lives over a two day weekend. Henry McCready, 58, of Columbus died after a Saturday night collision near Circleville. Another tragedy involved James Triplett, age 2, who died at Cincinnati General Hospital after becoming entangled attempting to climb over crib bars.
Governor Frank J. Lausche urged the acting state agriculture director not to reintroduce pari mutuel betting at the Ohio State Fair. He said no animosity toward pari mutuel betting, but it should not be conducted at the fair.
James Everett Kaiser 27 Wellston Route 3 died from a gunshot wound after an altercation at Ingles restaurant and cab station in Wellston. Alva Ditty, a cab driver, fired three shots at close range, Kaiser later died in an ambulance en route to Holmer Hospital. Kaiser served in the Marines in the South Pacific and is survived by his parents wife Mabel a son and two brothers. Services set for Tuesday at 2 p m United Brethren Church with interment in Ridgewood cemetery.
In Damascus a lightning coup ousted President Zayim and Premier Berani. Col. Hennawal declared the armed forces chief and vowed rule by decree with a war council. The men were executed at Mazza barracks after a military tribunal convicted them of treason.
In Washington today House leaders gave President Truman a 1.45 billion dollar foreign aid and arms program top priority amid mounting opposition. The Foreign Affairs Committee tentatively moves to final action, with Rules ready to clear for debate likely Wednesday or Thursday. Opponents, though losing parity in committee, vow to fight on to cut the program in half and limit its life to a one year interim ending March 31.
A 20 year old youth, Don Barr of Parkersburg, is held in connection with the fatal stabbing of 44 year old divorcee Iva Dale McDonald. She died after three stab wounds and the body was found in front of her cottage.
Thirty seven new polio cases were reported to the state department of health today increasing Ohio total to 424 since January 1. Cases were in Butler 13 Cuyahoga eight Franklin six Mercer four Shelby two and one each in Knox Jefferson Fulton and Stark.
Ohio state auditor Joseph T. Ferguson accused 18 Holmes County highway workers of a false payroll records scheme that netted $670. He said funds were drawn from the state while employees were actually paid by the village of Kilbuck.
