Convention Nominates Grosvenor at Lancaster Rally

Delegates from Athens and Fairfield counties met in Lancaster for an adjourned session of the congressional convention. General Grosvenor received a unanimous rising vote after an enthusiastic speech and Albert Douglass of Chillicothe was endorsed for governor by the convention members.

Athens Triumph in Congo Sunday Baseball Game

Athens colored baseball team played Congo Sunday afternoon. the game stayed close with exciting moments. Notable events included Strickland’s unassisted double play with bases loaded and Wade and Lockhart delivering solid pitching and catching. Final score Congo 2, Athens 4, with Tucker and Mark collecting two base hits and D Branton a three base hit.

Democratic Convention Sees Poor Attendance and Nominations

Athens county Democrats staged a sparsely attended county convention in the court room amid sharp derision of the party’s strength. Delegates and alternates to state and congressional meetings were selected, with names announced for county offices including Probate Judge A.H. Wells and Clerk Peter Josten.

Will Mansfield Drowns After Boat Capsize On Howking River

A man named Will Mansfield, age about 33, drowned after a small boat with companions capsized on the Howking River opposite Hastings house. The body was recovered from twelve feet of water about an hour and a half later by Eber Sams. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at Clark's Chapel.

Struck Oil in Rome Township

The Montgomery Oil and Gas company drilled on G. W. Frames farm two and a half miles from Stewart, reached the second Cow Run sand at 370 feet Friday morning and was shot in the afternoon. A fair showing of light, lively oil suggesting 50 oil men that the hole is near the edge of spool, with a twenty foot sand. Other wells have been sneated and prospects look good for a rich strike.

Bell Ringing Party Ends In Discharge And Wounding

Bethany August 10. T W Barnes of Lynch Virginia and Misa Nellie Petty of this place wed in Athens last week. A bel ling party at the bride’s home erupted into noise with no surprise to anyone. Mitchell accidentally shot Captain Will Leake in the calf during the mischief. Leake was moved to Guynville for medical care. Barnes then ordered the party off the premises, but the revelers returned as Barnes fired three shots. No one was hit.

Athens City Council Discusses Light Question and Street Pavement

The Athens council met in regular session with most members present except five. M Hindson was noted absent. Little business occurred as discussion bogged down over minor issues. On the light question, the group delayed action pending legislative and municipal code determinations. Property owners on State street south side near Court were ordered to install a new pavement.

Hotel Neil Sold to O B Sloane on North Court Street

O B Sloane buys the Neil Hotel from J L Jones for 810000 and gains the entire block housing his store. The hotel will run at least until next spring before remodeling, with plans for future use not yet defined amid numerous Athens real estate deals.

Death of Mrs Joanna Barnhill in Burlingham Meigs County

Mrs Joanna Barnhill died at her Burlingham home Thursday evening from cancer of the womb. About fifty four, she leaves a husband and no children. She was a sister of Mrs John Cook of this city, who attended the funeral with her husband and daughter Mrs Zara Cook.

Little Girl Almost Poisoned by Fly Paper Incident

In Gmysville on August 11 a child, the daughter of Mr and Mrs James Vickers, nearly poisoned herself by swallowing poison fly paper left in a rear window. She grabbed the paper while playing in the yard and, after reaching, put it in her mouth. She became ill and vomited. a physician was called as she recovered.
