Murray City, a mining town near Athens and Hocking counties, faced a third flood in fourteen months after a cloudburst turned Snow Fork branch into a torrent. Homes and most stores were flooded as water and mud swamped the town.
Heavy rains caused Murray City flood damage with four feet of water on Main Street. Charles Walsh of Walsh Electric Company was held up for two hours while en route to Athens. Water surged between Murray City and Orbiston, delaying travel and flooding homes in Newtown and Smoky Flow. The town’s water system and pump station suffered damage, railroad tracks were undermined, and residents began cleanup as National Guard surveyed the scene.
Two new cases of infantile paralysis were reported in Athens county to district health nurse Miss Viola Fell. The first case, James Daugherty of Arden Place, was confirmed by Dr. John Sprague and led to quarantine of seven contacts. A third case, James Markie of Millfield, prompted immediate precautions. The health department faces staffing gaps as Dr. Higgins is away and the health commissioner is on vacation. The initial patient, nine year old Gich Janson of Tick Ridge, is slowly recovering from a severe bout with paralysis.
In Nelso xv ille, William Collins reports his wife assaulted him with a rolling pin and irons, slashed with a butcher knife, and threw an ice pick. He sought police protection. she later pleaded guilty to assault and battery, was fined 25 dollars plus costs and sentenced to 30 days in county jail.
Candidates for county and district offices campaigned all day in Athens with back slapping and handshakes. The courthouse square and shop area buzzed as cards pamphlets and cigars circulated leading up to the election day Tuesday. The hustling aspirants aimed to win over residents before many would not meet again.
Two boys from a crowd that tried to kidnap federal dry agents during a beer seizure were held for arraignment before U S Commissioner M J Monahen today in Cleveland. The incident occurred as agents destroyed confiscated beer.

TOLEDO Aug. 11 Mrs Sophie Neubert 27 and Wallace Stickles 34 a World War veteran shot and killed themselves in what police called the fulfillment of a death by own action pact. They were found huddled on basement stairs of a house under construction after crawling through a basement window to their rendezvous of death.
Pomeroy report states prohibition officers credit a marked drop in bootlegging across Gallia Meigs and Athens counties. Officials note few stills or active operators remain, with widespread raids no longer yielding arrests. Strong evidence suggests bootlegging has largely ended in the region.

About 10 000 attendees were expected with 99 radio stations covering the event, potentially reaching millions. Hoovers guests included Justice Harlan Fiske Stone and Attorney General William J. Donovan.
NEW ALBANY Aug 11 Clarence Smith 16 a Hardinsburg farm boy was shot during a raid on his home by federal prohibition agents and lay in critical condition at a hospital. His recovery was deemed doubtful. Agents said he tried to escape when ordered from bed during the raid in which his father a brother and two others were arrested. The youth allegedly fired against a shotgun held by Charles R Leibert a prohibition agent.
