Oral Daugherty told Nelsonville coal miners and chamber of commerce members last night he is more optimistic about the Hocking valley's future. He urged mutual cooperation between employers and miners to heal past rifts and regain markets, granting workers better employment prospects.
The Mock ing and Sunday Creek valley mines report a payroll of 75 000 to 80 000 dollars for the August 16 pay period. Current payroll covers July 16 to 31. A total of 1 436 men are reported working today.

Ida Perkins wife of Logan Perkins clerk of McCreary county circuit court was arrested for murder after firing on Owen. Conductor Dan DeMeen said Perkins fired two shots and attempted a third as she approached from the aisle while the two sat together. Detectives said Perkins was with Owen when the shooting occurred and was removed from the train at the scene.
The address drew about a dozen miners and residents as President Clarence Bennett led the meeting. The Chamber voted to hold the next two gatherings at 12 o clock on the first Wednesdays in September and October to test noon sessions and widen attendance.
