The Italian submarine F-14 was raised after a collision with the Missori off the Brioni islands in the Adriatic. All 31 crew members perished from chlorine gas and possibly sulfuric acid fumes after rescue attempts failed to save those aboard.
The Clark's Chapel M E church schedules a homecoming from 9 30 a m to 3 30 p m with music singing readings and addresses by former pastors Rev Cherrington Rev Fred Brown Rev Dallas Browning and others The Factory quartet performs in the afternoon and a basket dinner will be served.
The Rev Silas Moore will preach at Bethel Church in Knox Township on Sunday evening at o'clock. The notice invites parishioners to attend the service.
The Athens Messenger promotes a booklet titled Roses for the Home, claiming roses suit every garden use from lawn borders to trellises. The note invites readers to request a copy by sending four cents and enclosing a self addressed stamped copy of Roses for the Home.
In Cincinnati fog a plane owned by J L Bovis and piloted by Wendell Pavey crashed near the flying field. Bovis a famed amateur golfer and author, with wife and three children, had just begun flying. Pavey a former WWI pilot and instructor leaves a wife and baby son. The two were en route to Akron for a golf tournament and both were believed to have ignored fog warnings.
Mrs. R. D. Hughes, 33, was accidentally shot in the left side while on her back porch near Harmony on the river bank. Doctors could not locate the bullet, noting a minor skin wound that likely discharged before treatment. she remains bedridden but will not press charges.
Government officials claim an extensive French espionage network spans the occupied Rhineland and extends into unoccupied Germany. A Prussian government spokesman told United Press the system covered political military and industrial activities.
Comptroller J W McIntosh announced approval of the Commercial National Bank and Trust company charter for New York City. The bank will begin with invested capital of 12 000 000, the largest in starting capital for a national bank. director William Wrigley Jr of Chicago named among initial board.
In Cleveland on August 8 two crew members were killed when a steam shovel broke and a crane collapsed at the White House grade crossing in Cuyahoga county. Four others were injured while workers were eliminating the dangerous crossing.
Nelsonville August 8 United Mine Workers district No 6 executive board approves a temporary Garfield scale paying 5.70 daily and 69 cents a ton for wide coal effective as companies sign. The agreement aims to secure union sanctioned operation and prompt future talks for a statewide basic wage scale. Bell reports several Hocking sub district mines and eastern Ohio operators have signed or accepted the new terms.
In Cleveland a brick factory building yielded one of the state’s largest illicit breweries. Police removed a large police dog to enter. Chief Jacob Graut said 14 1000-gallon vats were found, eight with beer in progress and two 2000-gallon tanks full. No evidence of cooking found. likely brewed elsewhere and aged in these vats.
Emerson Burson of Mechanicsburg pleaded guilty to a second charge of intoxication before Justice Felix Riley and was fined 75 dollars plus costs. Earlier, Safreed was found guilty of reckless driving and fined 10 dollars with costs after an error in the prior report. Burson, released to raise funds, planned to settle his fines today.
Atlantic City report says Senator-Elect William S Ware of Pennsylvania remains a very sick man but is somewhat better this morning according to his physician Dr John J Shaw who provided the update on his condition.
In Columbus a northbound New York Central freight train crashed head on with a guard engine during fog injuring three men. Separately today the Fraternal Order of Eagles showcased its ritual as degree teams performed.
Arthur E. Lee 26 Bedford florist died after serious injuries from an Akron airport plane crash late yesterday.
In St. Paul Minnesota an armored car driver and five guards from the Sweeney Detective bureau were robbed of $10000 in currency after bandits used tear gas bombs.
Athens County officials announce that all presiding judges must file precinct reports by midnight August 14 or face deductions from pay. The secretary of state orders enforcement with a messenger dispatched to nonreporting precincts. Returns must be sent to the election board immediately after vote counts and telephone lines will stay open for night reporting.
Irving Karr, president of the Meigs County board of commissioners, faces a grand jury indictment for bribery related to a $240 payment from a Columbus detective to influence a fictitious Howell Land & Gravel company. Karr, 48, Syracuse resident and war veteran, says the case is politically motivated and will continue his re election bid.
All Athens county farmers and Grange members are invited to a Field Day tomorrow at the Carpenter experiment farm in Carpenter. Events begin at 10 with athletic contests, a 11 o'clock tour of corn plots, and a noon basket dinner followed by an address by Mr. Blackwood on Grange organization. George E. Brennan a national Democratic leader and recent Illinois Senate candidate died at John B. Murphy Hospital in Chicago after a long illness at 8 10 am. The veteran politician who shaped party strategy for years passed away this morning in the hospital.

Columbus August 8. Work on the state's new thirty thousand dollar fish hatchery in Crawford county near Bucyrus will be completed this month. It will be the fourteenth hatchery built and operated by the state as it seeks to increase to twenty. Thompson warns commercial fishermen are depleting the lakes and that too many take undersized fish in violation of the law.
Earth currents from auroral activity disrupted wire services and the Messenger office in parts of the United States today.
