Dispatches detail heat and drought across rural states with exploding popcorn in Longview Texas fields and water restrictions in Lincoln Nebraska. Oklahoma and Tennessee report cotton fields burning as weeks pass without rain while Missourians cull cattle and bees suffer losses. Grain traders in Chicago see a demand spike as corn and wheat futures rise on drought damage.
Old Kentucky relative says Jake Zuta’s burial will be a simple private Orthodox service in Middleboro with a $40 casket, no flowers or public attendance. He claims heir rights and warns Chicago politicians and officials to stay away.

Work to resurface North Court Street between West State and Carpenter Streets was expected to finish today. Traffic has been diverted on West State Street and on East State and Mill Streets during the pavement project.
A collision between two Blackpool excursion trains near Preston Station in Lancashire injures about 190 people. Fourteen passengers are in serious condition and were hospitalized after the early morning crash.

Company L, 166th Infantry of the Athens National Guard returned from Camp Perry after a two week encampment and earned multiple honors. The Athens group took first in squad musketry and landscape target practice, plus top honors in tents and field equipment setup. Thomas Winning won first in high jump shot put and broad jump, while Kenneth Woogerd placed fifth in National Rifle Matches tryouts. Capt. T. W. Shaffer and Lieutenants Vercoe Murphy and Carmichael accompanied the unit.
The Athens city schools will open September 15 as announced today by George Whipple president of the Athens Board of Education. The date was decided at the board’s regular September meeting attended by W. W. Ankenbrand and Mrs. Ankenbrand. Superintendent and Mrs. Ankenbrand will live at 187 North Congress Street.

Athens residents faced a sleepless night as a new after dark high of 106 degrees was recorded between 2 and 3 pm. Hourly readings from the Ohio University Weather Bureau show 108 degrees at 1 and 2 pm and 90 degrees by 10 pm, with a drop to 78 this morning. The Hocking River reached a low gauge near 2.30 feet at MU Street Bridge, the lowest in eight years per the gauge and local residents noting the record-low stage.
Louis A. Pratt, 35, Coast Guard boatswain's mate first class, died at Cable Hospital after being fatally wounded by bullets from an unidentified craft during a mercy mission off the North Massachusetts coast. Fellow guard Cleo Faulkingham survived and aided Pratt to Ipswich Bluffs before transferring him to the hospital. Akron August 5 four men implicated in the Dolly Koslowski murder along Pig Lane Medina County were to be arraigned before Justice of the Peace Ainarworth at Medina. William Evans 26 Barberton machine shop foreman confessed to killing Dolly to save her from a life of shame and faced first degree murder charges. Sam Yakus 22 Barberton who drove the death car from Akron to Pig Lane was charged as an accessory. Joe Carrell Barberton alleged bootlegger faced white slave traffic charge. Dominic Carra Mansfield operator of the resort Dolly visited faced similar charge.
The Athens County Board of Commissioners awarded the two and a half mile Mineral Airline Highway surfacing contract to Albert Ebersbach of Middleport for 4454 dollars. Limestone will be used and work starts immediately. County bills were approved and sent to the auditor for payment. The board visits the county infirmary for an inspection and expense review.
