Prosecutor continues to gather evidence for a grand jury in the Hall Mills case. Two men are listed as subjects of arrest and six subpoenas have been issued in the investigation.
Two men are under surveillance and six secret subpoenas issued in Jersey City as Prosecutor Simpson builds evidence for the Hall Mills murder case. Subpoenas are ready to enforce if named individuals flee. Cronk, a Jersey City doctor, arrived in New Brunswick to record conclusions about where the victims were placed after being killed.
A 14 year old girl in Chicago was found unconscious in a park with a gunshot wound to the abdomen. She revived at a hospital enough to provide the name Arline Smith and a note saying she was tired of living with her mother.
After a wild chase across 50 miles of Central Illinois, T. E. Halcombe Gadsden of Oslo confessed to being a narcotic addict. He wrecked three stolen cars and was injured in the third crash before being captured in Quincy Illinois. The Aug. 4 report noted he was under arrest.
Frank J. Riley a Zanesville writer filed in Common Pleas court seeking 190000 damages from his former wife Louise Weller Riley her mother Mrs. S A Weller and cousin H A Weller all of Zanesville charging they plotted to obtain a divorce and hindered his work as a writer.
George H. Crow of Ohio University has been selected by the West Virginia Department of Education to act as institute instructor at Barksburg the week beginning August 30 and at Point Pleasant the following week. He returns to Marietta for the third consecutive year as institute instructor in Washington County.
In Chicago on August 4 a six or seven man was found shot in a cigar bid by a brick bound corpse. Police say the body, tied and submerged, likely dates to about a month ago and may be beer murder related.
Four people died and thirteen were prostrated as heat and humidity surged in the New York area. Temperatures reached 92 with humidity above 80 percent.
In Missouri, incomplete returns show a modified wet win for Senator George H. Williams and Rep. Harry B. Hawes as dry opponents trail. Kansas renominates Charles Curtis with anti Klan candidates ahead. Oklahoma sees Klan aligned contenders lead in some races while J C Walton trails Elmer Thomas.
After nearly two years in hiding along the Athens county and Washington county line, George Mullens was captured near Torch Hill at about 9 this morning. Officers including Pearl Helwig and deputies surrounded the area after a tip, shots were fired through a car windshield, and Mullens was wounded but not seriously harmed. He will be sent to West Virginia to face felony charges and illegal liquor manufacturing charges once papers arrive. A $75 reward had been offered for his return.
U S business leaders align with the Hoover administration in a campaign against foreign price fixing and trade barriers. The American committee of the International Chamber of Commerce outlined a plan to remove barriers hampering international commerce, following the secretary of commerce's push against rubber price controls.
In Morgantown West Virginia a preacher Rev L Moss of Pittsburgh was killed while preaching in a temporary church and a woman parishioner Mrs Jerome Robinson died from a gunshot. Police held Cliff Wilson for questioning amid conflicting witness statements including a 14 year old girl who said she saw Wilson fire through the window.
Chicago Heights officials said they had no clues about the fifth killing in three months among gangsters bootleggers and vice lords. Joseph Salvo 28 a saloon keeper was shot to death by three men firing from a passing automobile.
William Cahill former head of the Ku Klux Klan in Toledo was convicted of assault and battery and jailed ten days. Mrs Helen Boblick testified Cahill struck her in a downtown store during a quarrel.
Columbus August 4. State officials warn 10 000 employees may face delays in pay with a possible three month half pay period as general revenue funds dip below 100 000. Next payroll August 13 totals about 500 900 while the treasury holds 9 000 000 in special funds. Officials doubt transfers from special to general funds are legal.
Thomas Cochran of J P Morgan & Co admitted giving a ship news reporter the interview that caused a sensational advance in General Motors shares on the Stock Exchange. He denied predicting future GM stock prices. He was quoted by Morton Nicholls of Dow Jones & Co. aboard the liner Olympic.
New York stock market opens with a pause in the public buying and slight declines in leader shares General Motors and United States Steel. Speculators move in to lock profits after last week’s Morgan stock surge.
The Messenger announces a ten question intelligence test series starting Friday. Each test covers general topics or specific themes such as literature cinema Bible drama and arts for children. Each session begins with a recognizable artwork or sketch with one deliberate error and includes answers on the same day.
Pat McDermott suspected as key witness in the Meller slaying. a man calling himself John Smith fled across the Ohio River into West Virginia after a photo of McDermott appeared in the Athens Messenger. West Virginia authorities are alerted and pursuing the case.
Samuel Insull, Midwest utilities magnate who funded much of the Illinois primary spending, will be cited to the Senate for refusing to answer questions before the Senate investigating committee. Chairman Reed announced the move as Insull challenged the committee authority, a tactic similar to Teapot Dome contempt actions. The case tests Senate committee powers in contempt proceedings.

President Calvin Coolidge boarded a special train from Gabriels New York for Plymouth Vermont to visit his boyhood home. He traveled with his staff, press corps and photographers, while White House cars followed to the Coolidge farm. Mrs. Coolidge rode in the presidential car and planned to host her mother in Northampton Massachusetts during the trip.
Treasury experts forecast new tax cuts possibly before the 1928 election and at the latest by 1930 after statistics show the national debt reduced to 19.61 billion dollars. Public debt is reduced about 650 million yearly while European obligations will be funded over 62 years, with a projected total return above 21 billion.

A group of bankers in Mexico City offered to mediate in the religious issue, warning that heavy withdrawals could worsen the economy. About 17 million pesos were withdrawn yesterday amid bank fears, with talks aimed at suspending religious laws, allowing church reentry, and possibly a national plebiscite at year-end. Bishop Pasquel of Tabasco denied U S reports that the church made mediation proposals to the government.
