Gun Rampage in Mansfield by Two Brothers

In Mansfield Ohio two brothers John Brown 37 and J T Brown 33 terrorized the city by driving and shooting at people. One bystander Howard Mason 29 lost four toes from a shotgun blast and is recovering in hospital. Patrolman Glenn Adams intervened in a downtown parking lot and Mason was shot during the struggle. Crash Kills Ex-Governor Gardiner and Three Others

A private plane crashed into a wooded hillside near Allentown Pennsylvania killing former Maine Governor William Tudor Gardiner 61 and two friends. Also dead were Edward E. Chase 60 state senator and broker Edwin S. Burt 60 and Gardiner's World War II service noted. Gardiner led Maine 1929 to 1932 and earned the Legion of Merit for Italy exploits.

Seven Die in Texarkana Texas Hotel Fire

Seven persons perished when fire swept a second story Texarkana Texas hotel in the border city business district. Four others injured, two critically, as flames gutted the building above a cafe and clothing store. Fireman Ivy Dukes said five bodies were found near a room window and that victims suffocated. The lower windows were sealed by a fan, suggesting an attempted escape. Cause of the blaze is unknown.

Eisenhower seeks expanded social security coverage

President Eisenhower urged Congress to add about 10 percent of the population to social security for the first time.
