Budget Spending Cuts Elusive As Ever
In Columbus the Ohio budget battle centers on tax plans and possible cuts. Senate resistance to new taxes grows as welfare and education cuts loom, with a proposed 1.7 billion in new taxes to fund an 8.2 billion package. Senate leaders cite the weak economy and rising living costs as reasons against additional levies. A sales tax expansion to services is floated but would demand deep cuts. A six member subcommittee will draft line by line tax details while Finance and Education committees review spending. Other Senate actions include 30 day sentence review for misdemeanors and extending auto tag validity.
