Residents seek annexation for 463 acres east of Athens

Eleven signatures have been placed on a third petition seeking annexation of 463 acres along Route 50 east of Athens. Petitioning agent J G Hope started circulating Saturday with a goal of about 15 signatures before presenting to the county commissioners. Hope, a major local property owner in the area, previously opposed the annexation as city actions created a reservoir on land behind his home and the ABA bought 35 acres for an industrial site. The first petition was rejected for technical reasons, a second accepted, and a July public hearing voided for lack of six week advance notice. A new hearing may follow submission of the third petition, though two of the three commissioners have signaled opposition.
