Carelessness Blamed for Most Area Fires Says Forester
Lee Cates, forest patrol pilot with the Ohio Division of Forestry, told Athens Rotary the area’s fires are 90 percent caused by carelessness such as tossing a burning cigarette into brush. He noted grasses burn more than large timber fires and that trash burning accounts for much of this. Cates pilots Southeastern Ohio forests, with planes flying two to four hours daily at about 1,000 feet and 100 mph, helping cut fire acreage from 60 to 4.5 since 1923. Fire towers in 23 counties number 37, active March to May and October to December. Spring remains the worst fire season. The standard pumper unit leads ground response with axes, shovels, and equipment. other gear includes a back pack pump and chainsaw.
