Saigon reports the heaviest enemy bombardment in five weeks with over 1000 rounds. Eight South Vietnamese marines killed and 28 wounded as ground assaults follow. Hanoi claims 130 North Vietnamese killed along Quang Tri and Hue fronts.
Defense lawyers for Arthur Bremer begin their case amid psychiatric counter testimony that Bremer is sane. The 21 year old Milwaukee man pleads innocent by reason of insanity to 17 charges tied to the May 15 shooting of Alabama Governor George Wallace and three others at a Wallace campaign rally in Laurel Maryland. State psychiatrists testified Bremer is sane while a defense expert described him as latent schizophrenic unable to grasp or follow the law. The judge had ruled substantial doubt existed, prompting the defense to call witnesses to argue Bremer’s sanity.
Henry Kissinger has returned from secret Paris talks with Hanoi officials Le Duc Tho and Xuan Thuy. A White House spokesman said the Nixon adviser will push renewed U S efforts to end the Vietnam peace talks stalemate.
Elaine Edwards, wife of Gov Edwin Edwards, will be sworn in Monday in Washington as the second woman in the Senate. She was named temporary successor to late Sen Allen Ellender who died at 81 during a campaign for a seventh term. Her brief tenure ends after the November 7 election when Gov Edwards will appoint the winner to gain seniority with other new senators.
GAO begins full audit of the Committee for the Re election of the President to assess campaign finances and possible links to the Democratic National Committee break in. The committee will cooperate, says GAO official Philip S. Hughes.
Paul Hannon aged 84 and his wife Helen 72 of Charleston West Virginia were killed in a Tuesday crash when their car struck a tractor trailer at the intersection of Ohio routes 12 and 256 in northwestern Perry County.
Senate war foes planned a multi leveled attack on the Indochina conflict using the $20.5 billion Pentagon procurement bill as the vehicle. The body moved toward final passage but faced amendments on troop withdrawals and cease fire conditions.
