Pacific Northwest Rocked by Severe 1964 Quake

A powerful earthquake shook the Pacific Northwest with Seattle walls cracking and cars trapped under rubble. It was felt coast to coast in Washington Oregon and British Columbia with the Seattle Times Building swaying and services briefly interrupted. The event prompted evacuations from Olympia to Aberdeen and was likened to the Anchorage quakes by Seattle reporters.

Viet Gets Aussie Battalion for South Vietnam

Canberra reports Prime Minister Sir Robert Menzies announced in parliament that Australia will provide an infantry battalion for service in South Vietnam. Defense sources say up to 800 troops may be deployed. timing and location were not disclosed. South Korea has 2000 troops there, mainly for infrastructure work.

Viet Cong Targeted in Me Kong Delta Push

Saigon reports a force of over 1000 South Vietnamese troops moving against a key Viet Cong unit in the Mekong Delta toward the South China Sea. Authorities say at least 86 guerrillas were killed and 34 captured in the operation’s opening phase in Kien Hoa Province. Two Americans died in separate delta fighting nearby.

Burr Oak State Park gets lodge and cabin funds

The State Controlling Board released 1,434,180 for a 60 unit lodge at Burr Oak State Park in Morgan and Athens counties, plus 300,000 for 25 cabins and facilities.
