Severe storms pack south Texas with heavy rain up to six inches and high winds. Flooding expands as more than a dozen rivers threaten Houston area and travel routes, with at least 11 deaths reported and widespread highway closures.
Hungarian refugees at Knockali sheen camp in Limerick began a hunger strike to protest delays in US and Canada admissions. Breakfasts were served but none joined. the Red Cross official lamented the suffering of children. Some opposed the strike but feared reprisals. The camp holds 530 refugees, with 17 leaving for Argentina and 9 returning to Hungary last week.
A warmer trend in the north and cooler in the southeast with fair conditions in the north and partly cloudy skies in the south. Highs 5-16 in the north and 65-72 in the south, with lows 38-54 north and 44-45 south. West Virginia sees increasing cloudiness tonight and Tuesday, milder temperatures about 6 to 9 degrees above normal and little precipitation, less than 1 tenth inch in scattered showers south tonight and again late in the week.
Democratic National Chairman Paul Butler says President Eisenhower gave special access to Teamsters leader Dave Beck, calling him a friend with White House entrance. He cites calls for union fund safeguards after Senate Rackets Committee charges. Hagerty notes Beck attended White House dinners.
A stream of escaping gasoline caught fire Sunday on the Mississippi River near Cape Girardeau Missouri. Flames burned a barge at a pumping station and it drifted toward the city belching smoke. The barge sank after about 25 minutes with muffled explosions as Cape Girardeau residents watched from the riverfront.
In Columbus about 450 Hi Y and Tri Y legislators enacted 96 bills during their model general assembly before adjourning. Passed measures outlaw secret societies abolish union shops and impose death penalty for convicted dope peddlers. They defeated a tax on soft drinks and a measure granting 18 year olds the vote.
A twin engine Navy aircraft struck a 4200 foot mountain 80 miles southwest of Tokyo on Saturday. Helicopter crews removed the bodies of four Americans after the crash and fire. The incident occurred near Yokosuka, Japan, prompting a military recovery operation.
In Padua a trial opens with 17 of 35 defendants, including Dante Garrieri, facing charges from murder to embezzlement over the Congo treasure. The missing fortune from Mussolini’s 1945 flight, believed to be worth millions in gold and currency, is alleged to fund postwar Italian Communism. Prosecutors accuse Gorreri and others of leading the band and ordering killings.
The Senate special hearing examines alleged payoffs by Earl Bettendorf of Ashdown Arkansas to two Scranton Teamsters Union agents. Bettendorf says forced payments were required to secure delivery trucks for a Tobyhanna Pennsylvania depot project. The committee seeks four key witnesses for a new probe of Teamsters President Dave Beck.
AFL-CIO President George Meany rejected Beck’s plea for an advance negotiation on Beck’s suspension. Beck asked April 18 for a five man committee from the AFL-CIO executive council to discuss his suspension ahead of May 20 hearings. Meany said he would pass the request to the 28 member council for action at the May 20 meeting. Beck was suspended March 29 for invoking the Fifth Amendment before the Senate Rackets Investigating Committee.
In Mesa Arizona Harold Seveland and his wife Cherie describe a blast that destroyed their home at the moment of a kiss. Mrs Seveland had used gasoline to clean clothes and started the washing cycle when the explosion occurred, causing about 1000 dollars in damage.
In the statewide finals 93 bands and 116 vocal groups competed. Arlington High School of Hancock County won superior ratings in class C-2 in bands and all four choirs. Delphos Jefferson High School won superior ratings in class C-1 at Granville.

EF J Taylor of Ohio University College of Applied Science was elected president of the Ohio Society of the Sons of the American Revolution. J Boyd Davis of Rio Grande College Board of Trustees was named second vice president. Samuel K Houston of Akron became first vice president. The convention at Youngstown also elected Rev James Deforest Murch, Cincinnati, state chaplain, and Charles A Jones, Columbus, secretary treasurer. Raymond A Lee of Athens chaired the Southeastern Ohio District. An Akron youth won the historical speech contest among district finalists.
Ohio State Auditor James A. Rhodes released an audit on Longview State Hospital noting 21 676 11 dollars in illegal expenditures and 7 488 46 dollars in losses to the state at the Cincinnati mental institution over three years. He said purchasing practices causing the charges were halted and inherited by the current administration.
Kenneth F. Goodson age 46 of Ravenswood West Virginia was killed when his car plunged through a guard rail on Ohio 7 near Marietta and overturned. The weekend Ohio death toll reached twenty one with sixteen in auto accidents.
Harry Hamilton Price 79 president and general manager of the Columbus Die Tool and Machine Co. who founded the firm about fifty years ago died Sunday in University Hospital.
AP correspondent Michael Goldsmith in Geneva was released after serving a 24 hour sentence for refusing to disclose news sources in an espionage case. Government authorities held him in Bern Switzerland before transfer to Geneva for the brief confinement.
Columbus firefighters were injured while tackling a blaze at a two story brick housing project on the east side. Four firemen required treatment for burns after gas meters melted as they worked to shut off a main line. Twenty four tenants evacuated and nine occupants of eleven apartments were overcome by smoke.
Amman reports King Hussein returns from a surprise visit to Saudi Arabia with King Saud after a conference with Egypt and Syria leaders. He rejected a prior Soviet relations proposal and blamed international communism for Jordanian troubles as curfew eases for eight hours.
Governor C William O Neill and Ohio University President John C Baker discuss a projected ten year surge in demand for higher education. Baker chairs a 12 member commission studying faculty recruitment and facility adequacy to meet future enrollments and preserve standards.
Dr. Novice G. Fawcett, inaugurated as president of Ohio State University, urged Ohio to build two additional universities if the state reaches 10 million people. He also proposed two year technical schools in urban centers to meet rising enrollment. He warned of unmanageable college enrollments within a decade.

The House has cut a further 1.141 billion from new funding and could hit the 4.4 billion foreign aid plan, while aides see momentum fading. Augusta protest over a 47 million State Department cut drew White House opposition.
