President Eisenhower, speaking by telephone from Augusta to a Providence New England GOP conference, acknowledged internal differences but predicted GOP success. He defended the administration’s foreign policy, economic growth, and higher living standards while noting conservative criticism of the $71.8 billion budget and modern Republicanism.
President Eisenhower called for government supervision of employee welfare funds facing opposition from business groups who argue scandals involve union run funds. Joshua Romine Morton, 79, a Meigs County native and longtime Ohio University chemistry professor, died at his Athens home. He joined OU in 1910, led the Chemistry Department from 1936, and coauthored textbooks used across 70 colleges. Morton also held numerous Masonic and York Rite roles and contributed to wartime research.
