Allied forces drive deeper into Tunisian battlefront as Gen Eisenhower headquarters reports allied and Axis actions at both ends of the line. British First Army pressing forward amid desperate counter moves in the center as merited by new gains in the theater.
Allied reports claim clear advantage as operations in North Africa continue. March 29 to April 24 fliers destroyed 1 064 enemy aircraft while losing 270, with progress near Medjez El Bab and gains by American and French forces.
In SAIC New Jersey a trans van ran over a cardboard box and fatally crushed a boy. John Mitchell died after being found with a skull fracture in the vehicle area and later at a hospital. The driver reportedly heard a scream before discovering the injured youth.
Athens County salvage leaders including community chairmen and town trustees will gather next Tuesday at 8 PM in the commission room basement to plan fundraising and salvage work. H Wakefield, county chairman, announced the meeting and urged all leaders to attend.
Civil defense volunteers aided police in Akron and Cleveland as Northern Ohio recovers from tornadoes. A fourth death was caused when Herbert J. Sutherland, 28, a Cleveland Light and Power lineman, was electrocuted repairing storm damage. Other fatalities included Arthur C. Cowrse of Cleveland and two Akron orphans, Richard Paternoster and Anthony Fernbach. Damage estimates in Akron range from 2 to 3 million dollars, with Cleveland at about 1 million.
Arlo E. Root, 45, died at his Coolville home after a brief illness. He and his brother Elbert operated a local garage for 20 years. Survivors include his wife Helen Kincade Root, his parents Mr. and Mrs. Frank Root, brother, nieces and nephews. Funeral services Sunday at two pm at the home. Burial in Coolville Cemetery. Friends may call after 3 pm Friday.
The Office of Price Administration advised the public that lay away orders for shoes extending past June 15 are invalid unless ration coupons are surrendered to merchants before that date.
Washington reports next winter's fuel oil rationing will be handled by mail in 33 restricted states. Price administrator Prentiss Brown says rations will not be cut.
