Graft Claims Roil Witnesses At Senate Stock Inquiry
Washington April 27 A.P Recall of witnesses who assured Senate investigators that all was well on the stock market appeared assured today as the inquiry board of strategy met to determine future policy and consider retaining additional counsel. Testimony of Richard Whitney president of the New York Stock Exchange has been directly and forcefully challenged by Rep La Guardia New York. The congressman strode into the committee room yesterday with two attendants and a trunk. In half an hour he was waving before the eyes of startled senators cancelled checks payable to newspaper financial writers La Guardia charged and offered the checks and other material as evidence that financial writers had accepted gratuities in exchange for ballyhoo stories which boomed stocks brought in the suckers to purchase and made promoters rich.
