County OKs 2018 Public Defender Contract Amid Reimbursement Drop
Athens County commissioners approved a 2018 public defender contract with the Ohio Public Defender Office at 529,824 dollars, part of a 883,041 dollar budget that will be 40 percent reimbursed by the state. The rate drop from 46 percent stems from reduced state revenues, prompting concerns over state funding responsibility and potential court action. Democratic commissioners urged lawmakers to guarantee 50 percent reimbursement, amid calls for broader funding reform and party divides.
