German Vice-Chancellor Franz Von Papen met with Cardinal Pacelli at the Vatican in Rome to gain papal backing for a Nazi church alignment against Communism. He planned further talks with Mussolini and an audience with the Pope, as Rome signaled cautious support if Hitler stays within civil government and continues anti Communist aims.

Deardorff and Co. department store in Gallipolis closed on order of Huntington Bank and Trust Co. after the bank, a majority stockholder, was taken over by the West Virginia Banking Commission for reorganization.
