Ohio debate denounces state asylum contracts and extravagance
A heated Ohio House speech attacks the Central Lunatic Asylum contracts, denouncing Democratic and Republican mismanagement since 1859. The speaker cites Ball committee findings, vows exposure of public-works waste, and warns against sweeping payroll increases while defending Republican records and reform efforts.

Brave slave boy leads escape to Union lines in Civil War era
A young enslaved boy near Newbern overhears a plan of escape and, aided by a fervent sense of liberty, journeys to Union camps about twenty miles away. He serves as powder-boy, later becomes an officer’s aide, and continues to influence both sides with his public speaking. In later years he returns north, reconnects with former master’s widow, and rises to prominence in public life.
