Unselfishness as a social disaster in Dorothy Dix’s view

Dorothy Dix argues unselfishness ruins lives by draining strength from individuals and turning them into petty tyrants. She cites business and family as prime arenas where self sacrifice harms both giver and recipient, transforming husbands into burdens and wives into peevish nags.

Matrimonial Partnership Roles Across Averages

The average man entering marriage expects to give and take in matrimony like a business. He provides clothing and outings, shares child-rearing duties, and takes on home chores, giving his wife her share of the perks without question.

Destructive marriage dynamics described in harsh terms

The passage portrays a domineering husband who expects obedience and control, spends lavishly on himself, and treats his wife as subservient, implying a relationship of imbalance and neglect. The imagery contrasts his self-fashioning with her degraded appearance.

Selfless mothers praised for tireless care and sacrifice

Unselfish mothers are held up as saints for their continual self sacrifice. They prioritize their children's needs, bake multiple cakes, and work hard in the kitchen to ensure the family can spend money freely and maintain well kept appearances.

Harsh parenting blamed for future failures and divorces

The passage argues that self centered mothers failing to demand effort from children create selfish, undisciplined individuals who struggle in life. It claims half of failures and divorces stem from unselfish mothering, stressing the impact of upbringing on outcomes.
