City police report 142 state warrants executed this year across sixteen counties. Four men charged as accessories to Horace Dent’s killing led to recent arrests, with officers receiving $2 per capture. Arrests by county include Clarke 65 Oglethorpe 17 Jackson 17 and others totaling 142.
Col. Thomas S. Mell was appointed auditor by Judge Brand to hear the receivers of Athens Trust and Banking Company against the Interstate Casualty Company bond on cashier R H McCrary. The $20 000 bond covers faithful discharge of duties. McCrary faced embezzlement charges as receivers seek damages. no legal representative for McCrary yet.
In mayor's court John Neeley, colored, faced charges of cutting and slashing his sister after a three week absence. He claimed the injuries occurred during her attempt to take a knife while he was intoxicated. The sister gave a different version and Neeley received ten to fifteen days. A second case for drunken disorderly conduct resulted in a five to ten day fine.
Malcolm Smith Jim Pritchard Robert Bullock and Earnest Woomack four young white men are in the county prison on warrants from the coroner s inquest into the death of Horace Denton stabbed to death at Comer Bullock s home on Chase street last Friday night The principal J W Scoggin has not been located The four men refuse to say where he is or how he escaped The officers believe they aided and abetted the slayer They will be held without bond until the grand jury meets or Scoggins is caught and convicted.
Mr. S. L. Galpin Ph.D. assistant State geologist spent the week in this city. He worked on data for the new geological survey and was accompanied by Mrs. Galpin on several trips.
Mr. Troy Beatty Jr., Athens representative at the University of the South, has returned to Sewanee after a pleasant vacation at his home with parents and friends. He is doing fine work and upholding the Classic City of Georgia’s reputation.
