The State Normal School reports a busy day as over four hundred students begin the year's work with full faculty supervision. A new course of study will guide exams and licenses at term end, raising standards. President Pound notes more high school graduates and top honors entering this term, calling the student body a picked lot.
Judge Orr in Clarke County awards custody of four children to the grandmothers amid a divorce case. He halts parental possession due to parental conflict and orders peaceful settlement while delaying final decision.
A Georgia widow seeks a husband in a rare classified appeal. Mrs. A. M. Shumate of Whitesburg invites correspondence from men aged 45 to 60 who can provide a home and farm support. The notice, mailed to a friend, stresses seriousness and means business, with results to be awaited.
W E Fureron, long time superintendent of the West End Baptist Sunday school, will be ordained as a minister of the gospel. A carpenter by trade, he plans to devote his life to preaching the Carpenter gospel. The ordination occurs Friday night the 19th at West End Church, after which he will attend the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville starting October 1. He is well known and trusted among the communities where he has served.
School authorities urge parents to vaccinate all children who have not yet received vaccination before entering public school next week. Children without proof of successful vaccination will not have cards filled and may be barred from starting school, to avoid delays and prevent painful arm injuries.
Philadelphia reports Holland ships shipping thousands of bulbs in transit. The harvest promises a fine crop with markets noting mature stock and bulbs not yet stored. The Rev Crawford Jackson general secretary of the Juvenile Protective Association and head of the Junior State reform school near Athens was indicted by the grand jury on a charge of attempted criminal assault based on accusations by a girl in his office. A true bill for attempted criminal assault was also returned against John T Mitchell. murder charges were filed against Frank Barton for stabbing John Edgar. Jackson defended himself saying he expected dismissal and urged public caution until trial and evidence is heard. He noted support from trustees and many in state who back him.
Jazzed program of music, comedy and vaudeville headlines today with the Kennedy company closing with Lost on an Island tonight. Next week the Ina Lehr Stock Company, 140 strong led by Bob Demerest, promises Athens its best act yet with top bills from big city runs at popular 10 and 20 cent prices.
Mr. A. B. Carter of Athens leaves today for Meridian to attend a textile manufacturers meeting of the Mississippi section. Carter is vice president of the Southern Textile Association, a premier mill men group. Also notes ads for Mountain Apples 35c, Arnold and Abney specials on green corn and green head cabbage.
Commerce is pressing to secure the 1914 Georgia Weekly Press Association gathering as Covington Milledgeville and Madison compete. Editor John Shannon of the Commerce News travels to Atlanta with a delegation to influence the executive committee. He seeks support from C C Callaway secretary of the Athens chamber to back Athens entertainment plans for visiting editors.
Special to the Battier Athens mourns as Mrs El Dearing Griffith wife of William D Griffith dies in Macon after an operation. Born in Athens she lived there until 1900 and is survived by five daughters and a son plus sisters and a brother. Funeral today in Macon with many Athenians expected to attend.
Father Clark of St. Joseph's Catholic church left yesterday for Griffin to attend a gathering tomorrow and Monday then proceed to the Isle of Palms near Charleston for the annual retreat with fellow workers. Also advertised are Maiden Blush apples and other produce at William Dunn's, plus extra fine head lettuce and large stalks of white celery.
There are few changes among the University of Georgia faculty for the upcoming term. Several long-time staff depart or take leave, new hires fill in, and duties shift among English, history, and physics departments. Registration opens next Monday ahead of the university’s Wednesday chapel opening.

A leading Athens warehouseman predicts well over three hundred bales of cotton will be marketed today with about fifty bales arriving yesterday, marking the largest daily total of the season. The first real cotton day is set for the first Saturday of the 1913 44 season, signaling the start of the movement in Athens.

In the National League, Philadelphia beat New York was rained out and Boston beat Cincinnati, with Washington 6 Cleveland 7 Chicago 5, New York 10 St Louis 3, Boston 18 Detroit 5. The Senators stretched to six straight wins as Johnson earned two of them and saved another.

Rev. C. C. Jarrell of the First Methodist church led a Bible class at Hiawassee settlement last night on The Bible. A good attendance heard his chalkboard illustrated talk on the Book of Books, its origin, authors, structure, and the Bible’s reach across history and the future. The Hiawassee Orchestra provided an excellent musical number.
A new men’s class at First Methodist Church draws strong turnout. Prof Jere Pound’s lecture sparked belief that a hundred men will attend regularly, prompting plans to enlarge the church with a new room or a building addition to accommodate the growing working male group.
