Yesterday the Clarke county grand jury returned a true bill for murder against R A Best who allegedly killed Floyd Stephens at the Southern Manufacturing mill village after drinking with others on a recent Sunday. The coroner's jury had recommended holding for murder and the commitment trial before Judge Young sent Best for involuntary manslaughter in the commission of an unlawful act.
Emory Parr was jailed for contempt of court after defaulting twenty dollars monthly alimony awarded to his wife in a divorce several months earlier. The arrest follows an order of the Clarke County court and recalls a similar prior case of a Jardant jailed on a comparable order.
Hezekiah Stevens, the man who shot and killed his wife on Rock Spring street, was indicted by the grand jury on murder charges. His trial is set for next week. Stevens remains jailed and engaged lawyers Judge Foster and Judge Thomas. His anticipated plea is the unwritten law.

A report from L C Brown says the Banner's Maxwell was trapped in a creek twelve miles north of Roanoke Tuesday evening and sent to repairs. Warner and Cook are safe, Athens friends have not heard from them. The Banner and three Athens cars ran Tuesday night with at least one, the Columbia of Flatow, reaching Winston Salem. Miss Marks reported at 10 13 PM that all arrived safely with a perfect score despite terrible roads and rain.
The annual conference of women's missionary societies in the Athens district opens with devotions led by Rev. England and talks by Mrs. Moore and Mrs. Higginbothem. Delegates from Winterville and West Point are highlighted. The day includes a social hour, a 10 am to 1 pm program, and a public invitation to attend.
