The Northeast Georgia Fairgrounds bustle as workers finish exhibits and set up the grandstand for opening night. Rain helped the track, and crowds are expected daily with wide regional interest and a 25 cent daytime grandstand charge.
The big edition titled the Georgia Edition is on the press and will be issued soon. The front page cover was drawn by G F Green, brother of J E Green, noted for his many honors in the field. He won a contest with over three thousand contestants.
An advertisement urges customers to ask for Clifton patent flour, promising satisfaction with every sack. If the flour fails to meet representation, money will be refunded. Clifton is touted as an all purpose flour fit for cake pastry rolls and biscuits.
Five year old William Mallory, mascot for Governor Terrell and his staff, wrote the governor promising to meet him at Seaboard Air Line depot and ride with him to the Commercial hotel. The governor accepted, noting delight in a mascot led trip to Athens. The mascot will report with the reception committee at the depot Monday morning.
The play Human Hearts portrays Tom Logan a village blacksmith framed for murder by a seductive woman and her former lover. After a life sentence, Governor intervention frees Logan as the true culprits are revealed in a blend of pathos and humor with strong stage work.
Mayor Rhodes handled a youth case involving painters in his court. Two spotters were released for insufficient evidence. Fifteen year old Philip Weltner admitted guilt but not involvement with private property painting. Weltner fined five dollars plus costs after a stern lecture. Recent vandalism included defacing private property and the First Methodist church. Mayor Khodey offers a twenty five dollar reward for church painting suspects.
Col Luke G Johnson aged eighty died yesterday at the home of Mrs K T Johnson in Winterville after weeks of illness including a paralysis stroke. A Confederate veteran and colonel of the 3rd Georgia regiment, he fought from Dalton to Atlanta and at Roney Hill. Survived by several children including Rev Luke G Johnson and A S Johnson, funeral tomorrow at ten at Mrs R T Johnsons residence with grandsons as pallbearers.
The regular monthly meeting of the Industrial Home, which would have been held next Monday, is moved to this afternoon at four o'clock at the Home building on Thomas Street. Full attendance is desired.
The Athens Compress starts today for several days of work to handle the season. Previous year saw over forty four thousand bales of cotton compressed. this year expects a similar or larger total if the crop is not short.
Mercer was disbanded after uniform disputes and Coach Harvey's resignation. Harvey desires a return and a Mercer reorganization could lead to a gridiron appearance. The Georgia vs Mercer game was canceled and may be reinstated if Mercer is reformed.
Harper's Weekly plans a special Southern edition with three million copies. Leading Southern figures will write on South resources and advantages. Advertisers from major cities will be featured opposite a full page illustrated editorial from the Athens business scene.
Athens officer H N Thomas begins building a new neat attractive cottage at the corner of the Boulevard and Nacooches avenue. The project adds a growing section landmark to the city.
Robert L. Johnson formerly of Athens and a 1887 University of Georgia graduate died in a cave in Columbus while measuring a trench. A Black helper also perished. Rescuers were injured in a second collapse as the body was recovered.
Athens Georgia October 1 1903 a called council meeting heard A L Hull of the Board of Education report under a new convict lease act the county seeks sixteen convicts which would cut the county school fund by 250 and the city by 400 the matter was referred to the finance committee.
Yesterday morning at the chapel Prof R E Park spoke to University of Georgia students about Oxford University. He spent several months there in study last spring and shared many interesting facts about the renowned institute of learning.
A twenty five dollar reward is offered for the arrest with sufficient evidence to convict the party or parties guilty of painting on private property or church property in the city. J. F. Rhodes Mayor.
Jim Owens a young colored man employed by Chas L Rounds on the Augusta city hall brick work fell forty feet from the top story after a plank slipped in light rain. He landed on the basement floor, suffered head and back bruises and a broken collar bone but no internal injuries were evident. Doctors Goss and Falklove treated him as he recovered on site. The incident was described as miraculous.
A large workforce at the Southern Manufacturing Company plant spurs a developing community in Boulevard with about fifteen cottages already built for operatives and more housing planned as demand rises.
The Griffeth Implement Company presents a Myera pump at the fair grounds for public use. The pump, described as one of the best in the world, will supply ample water and is free for all attendees to use.
