In a Strong Street home Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Head saw three of their children aged nine, six, and four become gravely ill with ptomaine poisoning after meals including cabbage, buttermilk, and a tan tinged candy. Doctor Quillian treated them. the older girl shows improvement, the younger two remain dangerously ill.
The Midway begins to arrive today as the Fair grounds prepare for opening Monday. Management has worked with a large crew for days to finish setup, and merchants rush to display their exhibits. Agricultural hall shows active preparation and a strong array of resources of the state.
Athens citizens and visitors will flood the Northeast Georgia Fair as Athens Day shuts city schools and many stores. Thousands are expected, with University of Georgia and State Normal School likely taking holidays, and a strong program planned including notable races and attractions.
Barnett writes to the public denying rumors of danger at the Fair Grounds Grand Stand of the Northeast Georgia Fair Association. He states improvements underway will ensure safety for the occupants and road traffic served by the structure.
On October 12 1903 at 11 pm in the Clarke County Georgia Superior Court Athens the state represented by Charles H Brand solicitor general Western Circuit will seek to validate a proposed one hundred thousand dollar Clarke County road bonds. Guards are ordered to report to the Armoury at 7 45 tonight for Company and close order drill by order of Captain W A Capps. Hood's Sarsaparilla advertised as a cure and tonic appears in the notice.
State Agent J S Stewart collects testimony from prominent Georgians on the value of college training. He cites the Harris family of Cedartown and Supt J C Harris of Rome to show how education transformed sons into leaders with strong careers in the military, government service, medicine and insurance.
Julie Plunkett aged five died after a brief illness at the home of Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Plunkett in this city. The death saddened many friends and the child was interred at Union Point after the funeral.
This morning at 9 25 oclock Prof A E Park will deliver a lecture to the student body in the college chapel on his residence at Oxford England. He spent months in a special course at the University and his talk will be of rare interest with the public invited to be present.
The 1901 University of Georgia dormitory nicknamed the Summer house and Yahoo Ball faces demolition after a growing crack was found in the eastern wall. Prof Strahan ordered temporary supports and girders to stabilize it until the June trustees meeting where a new dormitory plan will be considered. The building, central to early campus life, housed hundreds of students and marks Athens history.
L F Kennon of Watkinsville lauds Clarke County for road improvements praising Athens as best market in Northeast Georgia. He notes road funding is a duty, urges other counties to macadamize where possible and endorses continuance of the policy. Also mentions Chamberlains Stomach and Liver Tablets available locally.
Mr. George Foster Peabody authorizes University of Georgia to add contracts for steam heating electric wiring and lighting of a new library building his gift reaches fifty thousand dollars surpassing the original thirty to forty thousand dollar plan. Construction continues with foundation walls laid. completion hoped for next commencement with a trained librarian to catalog and serve students.
The New Opera House presents the popular play Human Hearts with a strong company led by author actor Reid. Plot follows Tom Logan wrongly imprisoned for murder, Jeannette’s schemes, and a pardon that leads to a hopeful union with Ruth Larkins. DeWitt's Little Early Risers hailed as effective laxatives.
