J H Smith a well known young mechanic and carpenter died of typhoid fever Sunday after a weeks long illness. He was thirty, leaves a wife and five children. Home on Pulaski street. The remains were taken to Berkeley Georgia for funeral and burial yesterday. He had been in Athens a short time and made many friends. There is deep sympathy for the bereaved family. A brother Irving resided in Athens.
Valentine Dunaway, a well known resident near the Lion Fond area, rushed Saturday night to confront a fleeing assailant as police officers fired at the suspect on Broad Street. Dunaway was struck by a pistol ball and remains in critical condition at the hospital. reports noted his condition as serious but later sources described it as improving.

Yesterday brought two police court sessions with many disorderly and drunken cases. In the afternoon ten crapshooters were tried after a raid on Washington Street yielded a room full of young men gaming on the Sabbath. The mayor fined each offender ten dollars and imposed an extra five on one intoxicated defendant. Mr W F Thompson’s whisky sale case was carried over to ten o’clock this morning due to his attorney’s commitments.
