Last January Athens faced an overdraft exceeding forty thousand dollars. By next January the deficit will be practically wiped out due to persistent efforts by the finance committee led by Capt. McMahan and strong tax collection by City Marshal Brooks. paving accounts settled, back taxes collected, and prudent spending reduced the shortfall.
Sheriff J. W. Wier holds as his property a collection of nails from the old Wier residence beyond the State Normal School. The house, once inhabited by his ancestors, is being torn down by John A. Fowler who plans a new home on the site. The nails, fashioned by Wier’s forebears, are at least a century old.
Hon W A Blount a Georgia University alumnus and prominent local figure loses his law library worth twenty five thousand dollars and substantial property value in the Pensacola fire. His wife Mrs Blount was visiting Agnes Georgia at the time. Insurance covers little of the estimated one hundred thousand dollar loss. The note adds a Swift quote and a hopeful jab at politicians.
Wednesday night a party at Jack Kenney's Hancock avenue home escalated when Charlie Derricotte and Jake Williams drew pistols and threatened to shoot if police were called. Kenney later swore warrants against them for pointing a pistol at another.
The University of Georgia distributed ten thousand bulletins detailing the agricultural department program. The aim is to attract young farmers statewide to enroll, highlighting a rapidly improving department and growing student attendance as more learn of the opportunities offered.
Tomorrow night a council of the Secret Order of United Commercial Travelers of America will be organized in the city with Past Supreme Counselor Chas W Rice of New York as instituting officer. Headquarters are in Columbus Ohio where the national body meets each June. The order, 18 years old, has about 34000 members and 309 subordinate councils in the United States and Canada.
Dr Isaac S Hopkins slipped on a banana peel on Clayton Street and was badly bruised with a split nail and swollen hand after the fall. Several women also slipped recently prompting calls for enforcement of the local anti peel litter law.
A boy alerted Officer Cook that a burglar unlocked Cobb Lampkin's store. Rushing with citizens, they found the intruder in the dark building. It differed from expectations as Dr. James M. Lumpkin was inside simply feeding a loyal cat.
Grand Counselor C D Montgomery of Atlanta and members from Augusta Macon Atlanta are expected Saturday for the charter members of Athens Council No 315. Traveling men will participate with a goat in training brought from Atlanta by Friday night. Mr Rice invites commercial travelers to visit him at the Commercial. The United Commercial Travelers fund aids widows and orphans of deceased members and offers accident insurance. Pickles and peppers advertised by Mrs Hipkins.
The Banner notes registration for the upcoming city primary is moving slowly with under one hundred names so far and over twelve hundred voters still to register. Books close on the 20th at 2 0 Welock p m leaving about fourteen and a half days. The piece urges voters to register promptly to ease the clerk’s workload and prevent a last minute rush.
The Donnelly and Hatfield Minstrels led by Tommy Donnelly and Harry Shunk performed at the theatre to a large crowd. The act featured sing ers and dancers of unusual ability with Lindy Lou encore highlights and witty banter. The Toledo troupe delivered a high quality, entertaining show praised as a standout of the Field minstrels. Chamberlain's Stomach and Liver Tablets were recommended locally.
Tonight at the office of Chairman J C Tuck the city democratic executive committee meets to decide primary rules and date. Members include J C Tuck chairman William Dootson Lee Morris J M McCurdy and T P Oliver. Australian ballot to be used in all primaries until the county convention.
The Woman Hater is presented to amuse audiences for a couple of hours with Harry Beresford starring in David D. Lloyd's comedy. Beresford's charm and verve are praised as key to the show's appeal. Rev. Troy Beatty attended the Macon grand lodge session yesterday.
A Chicago letter extols Grape-Nuts as a remedy for long standing hemorrhoids and constipation.
