Athens Public Schools closed for summer with large turnout at Washington Street and downtown primary ceremonies. Superintendent Branson received a gold watch from teachers and pupils as they praised five years of leadership and anticipated continued success for the district.
A patent medicine ad promises relief from fullness and heaviness in the stomach along with nausea acidity flatulence dull head pain and kidney and heart symptoms. One bottle is said to prove its cure with a larger double bottle size offered at $1.00 from Montezuma Georgia manufacturer Dr Holt's Dyspeptic Elixir Co.
Dr WL Jones buys a house in Atlanta and will move there. W H Pope plans a visit from Atlanta to communicate. James C Mell departs on a business trip to Augusta. Bolling Stovall will visit relatives in Columbia county this summer. Joe Hutchins praises the new Georgia road train. Rem Remsen of Augusta leaves Athens after a several day stay. J W Barnett shows improvement from a sprained ankle. Mrs William DuBose returns home after visiting Mrs Charles DuBose. Misses Maria Bones and Lizzie Lou Walker of Augusta plan a summer home trip to Bath. Mrs Francis Fontaine and Miss Minoie visit Athens next week. Henry W Grady praised for Tennessee college speech at commencement.
Captain J. H. Adams of Eatonton Georgia reports that during the summer of 1883 he suffered continual neuralgia attacks believed to stem from indigestion. He states Dr Holt's Dyspeptic Elixir was the only remedy that gave relief and that it is for sale by all druggists.
The Secretary of War with the President's approval approves increments of money for making and equipping the armed forces in the states and territories. Alabama Florida North Carolina South Carolina Tennessee Virginia listed with various amounts. Funds available next year.
Friday and Saturday afternoons will feature displays by Athens public school students at Washington Street School. Citizens may view the hands on industrial training accomplished during the last scholastic year. Hours are 3 to 5 o clock, and the public is invited to attend. Sickness among children is discussed with emphasis on proper nourishment, recommending Gail Borden Eagle Brand Condensed Milk as reliable for infants.
