Athens friends learn Loyd P Palmer stands out in a Philadelphia College of Pharmacy class. From a cohort of one hundred, his marked success is noted with pride among his supporters and local peers.
Thirty three members filled the class with four distinguished and Mr. Palmer receiving the Procter prize a gold medal and certificate for the highest general average and meritorious thesis. the Eta Chapter of Kappa Psi awards twenty dollars in gold to the graduate with the highest distinction. The city’s friends extend congratulations to Mr. Palmer.
A sermon by A. S. Colyar Jr drew over five hundred city residents Sunday night at the Opera House. He urged youth to avoid sin, warned that pleasures fade to death, and shared life events to illustrate temptation. The audience responded with strong approval and encouragement.
Oconee Superior Court to hold a special session called by Judge Russell to try J Aycock Rich Robinson Lewis Robinson and a fourth man charged in the Holbrook murder case. Citizens committee cites sufficient evidence for trial and pledges a speedy proceeding with Aycock denying involvement.
The Athens Lodges of Odd Fellows will be strongly represented at the grand lodge session in Savannah. Attending from the city are Cc W Parr W P Vonderau T S Mell C H Brand A W Dozier J H Dozier J E Gardner J B Willbanks R L Bramlett A C Bishop and about twenty five Rebekah members. The Rebekah degree team will perform. The order enjoys high prosperity and enthusiasm locally as they join the gathering.
The market shows middling cotton around 8 18 cents, higher than months of lower prices. Athens warehouses hold under five thousand bales as growers sell off staples. widespread rains threaten large acreages with abandonment and grass growth forcing reduced planting. A Jackson county farmer notes many have not cut acreage, blaming divine intervention for grass encroachment.
Rev W G Crawley invites Mr A S Colyar to address the prayer meeting at Oconee Street Methodist Church Wednesday night. Colyar has accepted and will lead the service at eight o clock drawing a large congregation.
U S Deputy Marshal T P Trammell and Deputy Collector Brown raided a 150 gallon still in Morgan County and seized 400 gallons of beer. Four men accused of operating the still face future arrest.
Ath ens Elks Lodge No 790 will move into its new hall today and hold the first session there tomorrow night. The remodeled Athyenaeum club house has become one of the prettiest Elks homes in the south. Members are urged to attend with special work and a social session planned.
The Oconee Street Methodist church revival ended after three weeks with 58 new members. Rev. W G Crawley preached on love and temperance, urging condemnation of links to liquor while touching on the harm of drunkenness. The sermon stressed scripture and left many attendees praising the pastor’s message. A religious ad for Champlain’s Chamberlain’s Tablets appeared in the notice.
