Martin age about forty five Georgia railroad agent was killed by his brother in law T J Smith known as Jack Smith Five shots rang out at close range with Martin advancing allegedly with a knife Smith claims self defense Both men were middle aged and well to do Martin had a wife and several children Smith had a wife but no children The coroner from Lexington was summoned and an inquest likely to be held next morning

Georgia Court of Appeals Rules Judges Cannot Suspend Sentences
The Georgia Court of Appeals ruled that a judge has no authority to suspend a sentence once imposed by himself or another judge. Albert Norman, convicted of larceny in Moultrie, challenged a second offense, but the court held the original eight months must be served and suspended only by the governor. Norman had faced eight months in the chain gang with suspension contingent on a fine and good behavior.

Hemorrhage from Lungs Ends Life at Freight Depot
Jim Gaines a respected Black laborer at Seaboard Railroad freight depot died within minutes yesterday morning from a severe and copious hemorrhage from the lungs. He had worked for twenty years, earning a good reputation for faithful service and honest conduct. The hemorrhage followed a bursting of a blood vessel in already diseased lungs.

Insurance verdicts favor plaintiff in two Williams cases
Yesterday morning the jury returned verdicts in Williams versus Southern National Life Insurance Co of Kentucky. One policy awarded $1,000 and the other $750. The insured died at his Lynwood Park home from a gunshot wound ruled as inflicted in a personal crisis.

Dairy Inspector Visits Athens Students and Tick Work
