A proposed state bill would abolish Clarke County's three county offices. If enacted, voters in October would elect new commissioners or the grand jury could select them. The measure would amend the 1897 act creating a Roads and Revenues Board.
St Louis May 19 The National Conference of Charities and Correction opens a week long session tonight addressing child labor loan sharks industrial hygiene rational care of consumptives wage standards and defects in the public school system among other public interest issues leading reformers will participate in debates and present studies on the best means of aiding the needy and reforming the incorrigibles.
Rev. C. A. Dobbs, guest at Governor Brown’s Marietta home, says Brown’s remarks imply a campaign announcement. Dobbs notes Brown has practically fixed his campaign and hints at a forthcoming formal declaration.
Col J Tribble will address the public at Wire Bridge near Aycock residence on May 21 at 1 PM. He will also speak in Stephens on May 24, Crawford on May 25, Sandy Cross on May 26, Point Peter on May 27, Colbert on May 27, and Winterville on May 28 with evening assemblies scheduled.
Mr Welborn DuBose arranged for wire service coverage of the Georgia Tech game in Atlanta to be broadcast at Harawa Hall this afternoon and tomorrow afternoon. Local spectators, both adults and youths, may hear the play by movement as it happens, offering a close view of the contest.
The Southern Bell Telephone Company prints and distributes the Athens exchange directory marking steady growth in phones in use by subscribers. The Odd Fellows general committee meets at 8 30 PM for final reports and to begin organizing one of the citys largest conventions. Citizens have pledged funds and lodging, with a call for additional home offers and resident names and addresses to host visitors.
Mr. D. H. Winslow United States superintendent of construction spent a day inspecting roads in Clarke County and the county farm and camp. He praised the roads and the farm quarters citing excellent sanitary conditions and well kept kitchen and mess hall. He will continue visits today and is expected to file an excellent report to the department.
A man named Armstrong, wanted in Atlanta for highway robbery, was arrested by Winder police after being spotted in Athens. He had earlier evaded Athens officers near Southern Manufacturing Company property and fled toward Atlanta on the S A L train. Armstrong’s alleged partner is already serving a sentence.
A Seaboard train carried a large Alabama delegation of Sunday school workers to the World Sunday School Convention in Washington D C. The Alabama group led by General Secretary D W Sims includes judges presidents and county officials with Georgians also aboard. The event marks the sixth gathering with workers from 51 nations and a parade planned to rival presidential inaugurations.
The Crystal Theatre on Lumpkin Street presents Jane Eyre from the New Thanhouser Co with high praise for acting and staging. Also shown Isabelle of Aragon with repeat run and varied musical pieces by Morris' Orchestra featuring Prof Emil Walter and Prof Hillyer.
Georgia may face the University of Virginia on the Athens campus next week depending on the Tech Georgia results in Atlanta. If Georgia defeats Tech, Virginia would be invited to Athens for a midweek game, marking Virginia’s first S I A A foe since 1907.
Charlotte dispatch notes Mr. Bryan of Athens elected an officer in the mill men’s group. The American Cotton Manufacturers’ Association elected D. Y. Cooper as president, Ellison A. Smith as vice president, and C. B. Bryant as secretary treasurer. New governors include Oliver, Beattie, Bryan, Cone, Maxwell, Baldwin, Eddy Jr. and others.
In the mayor's court Ranse Hawkins, a county Black man, is fined ten dollars for disorderly conduct after an incident with a mule and buggy. A Webb & Crawford dray driver tapped the mule to move aside, prompting Hawkins to threaten the driver before police found a Winchester rifle hidden under fodder in the buggy.
The State Normal School outlines a series of events for graduates. Dr John W Stagg of Alabama will deliver a Sunday evening sermon at 530, followed by the senior lathe address Monday at 11. A reception, alumni day events, a faculty reception, and a senior concert are scheduled as part of the commencement season. The graduating class is noted as the largest to date with around eight hundred names across departments.
Governor Brown tendered the post to Prof. M. L. Brittain Fulton county's long time county school commissioner and Emory College graduate. Brittain, backed by Bishop Warren A. Candler, is expected to accept and run in the August state primary as Jere M. Pound resigns to join Gordon Institute.
Francis E. Griffeth of Athens Georgia is listed among recent patent recipients for a new device for holding sad irons or smoothing irons. The Washington dispatches note Griffeth as inventor and describe the invention’s purpose and designation.
The Grand Lodge of Knights of Pythias adjourned in Brunswick Ga after rejecting Atlanta as the 1911 convention site and electing officers including Grand chancellor B D Brantley and Grand vice chancellor George T Cann.
Rev. M. L. Troutman of First Methodist Church has accepted an invitation to preach the program sermon at Mo cello next Sunday morning. His pulpit duties will be filled in his absence for the one service and the proper announcement will be made in due time. Lost gold watch and fraternity pin with pearls reported.
