A charity game between the Masons and Elks is set for next Wednesday afternoon and is expected to attract about two thousand spectators, the largest crowd on campus for an athletic event. Merchants promise to close early at 3:30 p m to accommodate and support the match.
Winnie Davis Hall received the proceeds from a May Party at the opera house last night. The May Pole dancing and the charm of the performance delighted attendees as the Daughters of the Confederacy organized the event to raise funds for the Winnie Davis Memorial Hall, to be completed within sixty days if possible. The group plans another entertainment soon to continue fundraising efforts.
Mrs John Totty Jr died after a brief illness Monday night at her Sandy Creek home near the city. She had been under medical care all day and suffered a convulsion late Monday. The community mourns the loss of a esteemed young matron. Funeral services are set for two this afternoon at theCiter Methodist with Rev KE D Stone of the city officiating.
The Southern Manufacturing Company is constructing several houses for its operatives and will have them ready for occupancy when the mill is completed. Three houses sit on Nantahala Avenue near the mill. others to be built in coming weeks as mill work progresses. Also promotes Hood's Sarsaparilla for dyspepsia and liver complaints and August Flower for stomach ailments.
Tomorrow at 3 pm on the University grounds the Winder and Athens baseball teams meet in a highly anticipated game. Admission is 25 cents with part funding a new grand stand. Davison and Love promote a bargain clearance sale of stock from Nmai Smith Co. featuring heavy discounts on pants shirts underwear and hosiery. Embroideries laces white goods printed cottons and house furnishings are advertised with low prices and a five cent counter for wash goods.
The Epworth League at the First Methodist church hosted a literary meeting at the Lampkin residence on Dongterry Street with readings and music honoring Father A. J. Ryan. Dr I S Hopkins presented The Conquered Banner while Miss Katie Jester and Miss Sarah Miss read, and Paul Lovejoy played violin. Mr and Mrs Gordon of Columba visited their daughter Miss Mary Gordon at Lucy Cobb and will sail for Europe with Miss Rutherford's party after two weeks.
A Kansas doctor tested meals on his four year old with long fever and found Grape-Nuts highly effective. The boy gained about eight pounds in a month and recovered well. An elderly patient with serious stomach trouble improved after two to three weeks on Grape-Nuts with milk and a little sugar, gaining 22 pounds in two months. The doctor notes many similar cases and says the full list will be provided by the Postum Co. in Battle Creek, Michigan.
Two horses hitched to a carriage at Central depot bolted on Thomas Street when startled. They smashed a telephone pole and into a grocery store area before collapse. One horse suffered a broken back and is likely to die. no one was in the carriage.
The Athena lodge No. 790 Elks will hold its regular weekly meeting at the Elks' Home Moss building tonight at o o'clock. After business a social session will follow with many members expected to attend and support charitable work in a quiet fraternal manner.
Dr. H. R. Bernard publisher of Southern Advance ran a Banner ad announcing features in July and September issues. By last night he had orders for 680 extra copies of the two editions. The Banner ad is noted to always accomplish the desired results.
Superintendent R A Sonn of the Hebrew Orphans Home in Atlanta arrives in Athens this morning to meet Col M G Michael and discuss ongoing work. He will spend several days promoting the institution and soliciting support from the Athens community for its charitable mission.
Judge McWhorter chairs the Georgia Bar Association committee urging attorneys statewide to attend the Tallulah Falls meeting July 2 3 4. Judge Alton B Parker of New York may speak. the convention will focus on practical matters with reduced formal papers and more committee driven business.
