Anaconda Fires Smother Deep Mines in Butte District
In Anaconda copper mines at Butte the company uses an old coal mine firefighting method adapted for underground fires. Water is pumped 1,200 to 2,000 feet underground to flood dead mine passages and smother fires that have burned for years. Since 1917, 260 miners have worked around the clock to tackle fires in three connected mines, aiming to render 80,000 tons of copper-bearing ore once more accessible by 1922.
