Negro Charged With Forgery Lays Blame on White Youth
In superior court Sam Williams a Negro with aliases faced arraignment on forgery and uttering a forged check. He allegedly cashed a $26.40 check at Anderson Bank in August 1913 signed by S Cutler of the Western Market. Williams said a white youth named Locklin asked him to cash the check and stamp it, and that Locklin later urged him to leave town. Cutler testified that Locklin had access to stamps and could imitate his signature. The defense noted the bank pursued Locklin first and reimbursed its loss. Locklin aided in locating Williams. The case remained unresolved at adjournment.
