County commissioners set July 6th or 7th for a bond issue of one hundred thousand dollars to macadamize country roads. No opposition exists but obtaining two thirds of the vote will require strong organization. The Chamber of Commerce will back the measure and appoint campaign committees to canvass and mobilize voters. Citizens are urged to advocate for the bonds.
Michael Bros advertises heavy discounts on Embroidered Muslin Silk Muslin and Mercerized Cotton Foulards with prices cut to 25 to 15 cents a yard. Wool dress goods and ready to wear garments are cleared at 25 percent off, with a closing out of ladies wear. The ad also promotes August Flower as a remedy for dyspepsia and liver complaints, claiming broad US prevalence and offering relief after two doses.
The first brick in the new city hall was laid yesterday at eleven in Athens. Mayor J F Rhodes placed the brick with a trowel as Chairman W P Vonderan and a crowd of citizens looked on. Workmen under CO L Rounds began laying the front foundation wall at the southeast corner near the City Engineer Barnett’s office.
Last night a large gathering at the Congregational church discussed the new model school for Negroes to be built near Helicon Springs. Education talks inspired support. funds for equipment were raised. Athens white citizens contributed, and land donated by Judia O. Jackson, long a local teacher, with her planned role overseeing the school.
The annual session of the Southeast ern Bill Posters and Distributors' Association will be called to order in Atlanta Monday morning. H. J. Rowe of this city, vice president of the association, will attend. Also included is an advertisement for Chamberlain's Yolk Cholera and Diarrhoea Remedy with a customer testimonial from H. R. Phelps of Plymouth Oklahoma noting no loss of time after using it. available at all druggists.
The Southern Intercollegiate Meet will unfold Friday and Saturday in Atlanta at Piedmont Park under Tech and Atlanta Athletic Association auspices. Nearly all S I A A colleges attend with Vanderbilt and Georgia favored to win in a hard fought contest. Events include sprints, hurdles, throws, and the mile with many entries from Georgia Tech and the University of Georgia.
The annual meeting of the stockholders of the Georgia Railroad and Banking Company is now being held in Augusta. A number of Athenians are in attendance at the session.
The Mt Vernon Lodge No 22 F and A M meets at Max Joseph building to transact important business and appoint committees for the Athens city hall cornerstone exercises. Grand Master Max Meyerhardt of Rome and Grand Lodge officers will attend. plans to secure funds and improve rooms are discussed.
Hon. Thomas H Jeffries of Atlanta has been elected Great Sachem of the Georgia Red Men. Other officers named include Great Senior Sagamore W. W. Dykes Americus Great Chief of Records M. J. Daniels Griffin and Great Keeper of Wampum George E Johnson Atlanta.
A New York City woman endured years of leg sores and slow healing until she stopped coffee and started Postum, noting leg healing and relief from headaches after a few weeks. The Postum claims credit for producing healthy red blood and urges trials to prove the effect.
The Lexington blue granite for the city hall walls is arriving, with two carloads unloaded at the contractor’s yards near the cemetery. P Bisson & Son won the contract to furnish the stone from Lexington quarries, and cutters are scarce, but work will be rushed to avoid delaying brick laying.
County commissioners authorize Judge A L Mitchell to insert notices in Athens Banner Clarke County Courier Athenian and Oconee Enterprise to gather information on local soldiers who joined the Confederate service. He will also seek details by correspondence as information is collected.
Judge Howell Cobb suffered a severe attack of acute indigestion late Tuesday night. Dr. W B Conway was summoned and provided relief within hours. Cobb was much improved the next day and expected to return to duty in a few days.
A U S soldier with leprosy remains quarantined at Tybee Island, under Marine Hospital care, after Savannah residents urged his removal. The War Department declined, citing no place to relocate him and no intent to abandon him. Government doctors deem the disease not as highly contagious as feared.
A May party, praised as one of Athens most beautiful, will repeat next Tuesday at the opera house for Winnie Davis Memorial Hall. Tickets cost 25 cents with 10 cents extra to reserve. sales by children, Palmer & Sons, and The Orr Drug Co. Proceeds aid the hall project aiming for completion by July 1.

Bargains include wool sergeants 1.93, shirts 0.50, suspenders 0.15, undershirts 0.10, drawers 0.19, collars 0.05, neck ties 0.11, lisle socks 0.90, belts 0.25, trunks 1.50, and various new white goods and hosiery. Also promotes DeWitt’s Little Early Risers from The Orr Drug Co. continuous sales and notices.
The annual address is set for Monday by Rev C W Brannen and the commencement on Monday with Dr Myron T Scudder of New Paltz delivering the address. The commencement includes diplomas and brief remarks by President Branson. Regular sessions resume next September as many teachers stay for the Summer School in Athens.
Glenn Lodge No. 75 Independent Order of Odd Fellows held a social meeting after conferring the first degree on several candidates. Nearly two hundred members attended in Athens with refreshments and social time. The lodge now has over two hundred members and will have four representatives at the Grand Lodge next meeting.
Dr. Thayer of Johns Hopkins Hospital returned to Baltimore after consulting with Dr. S. O. Benedict on Capt. W. W. Thomas. Benedict says Thomas is improving slowly but remains in danger. Also notes a testimonial for Dr. King's New Discovery for lung and throat troubles, with claims of cure and availability through local druggists, including trial bottles.
